The Denver Broncos, who finished their 2023 campaign with an 8-9 record have dealt with drama since benching Russell Wilson for the final 2 games of the season. The Broncos were firmly in the playoff race heading into Week 17 and many fans speculated as to why he was benched. Turns out it was a financial decision due to the injury clause embedded in his contract.
Since benching Wilson, Denver’s front office has been deciding whether to keep him around for the future with his expensive contract or looking for a replacement under center. Head Coach Sean Payton offered reporters a timeline on the decision.
Denver Broncos HC Sean Payton Says They Will Make Decision in Next Two Weeks
While answering questions at this year’s NFL Combine, Payton told reporters that a decision will be made on Wilson’s future within the next two weeks according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The Broncos still owe over $38 million in guaranteed money to Wilson for his last contract, but cutting him before March 17th would save them tens of millions in 2025.
Russell Wilson on 2024 NFL Season, “I want to be in Denver”
Despite the drama surrounding his name and the organization, Wilson said he wants to remain in Denver for next season when asked on the “I am Athlete” podcast last week with Brandon Marshall.
“I got more fire than ever,” Wilson told Marshall. “Especially over the past two years of what I’ve had to go through. Whether it’s Denver of somewhere else — I hope it’s in Denver. You know, I hope I get to finish there. I committed there. I wanted to be there. I want to be there.”
Wilson threw for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and 8 interceptions in 15 games played this past season and completed 66.4 percent of his passes. While Denver struggled to finish drives, Wilson was efficient throughout the season and had the Broncos chasing a playoff spot late in the year. If Denver decides to let him go and find a new man under center, there are plenty of teams in free agency looking for a quarterback with Wilson’s talents.
