Despite a mid-season surge, the Denver Broncos were still unable to make the playoffs a few months ago. That could all change if the team selects a new quarterback from the NFL Draft and builds the roster around that prospect next season.
After a poor 1-5 start, the Broncos found their momentum by winning five straight last season. After that string of victories, the team would win two more games before they were eliminated from playoff contention.
Coincidentally, Russell Wilson showed signs of improvement after posting his worst performance the season before. Later on, head coach Sean Payton benched him and chose backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham to run the offense during the Bronco’s last two games.
NFL Draft Expert Predicts Denver Broncos Will Select J.J. McCarthy
If all goes well, Denver has the chance to solve its quarterback problem in the draft. Mel Kiper Jr. explains more in his article for ESPN:
“They’re almost certainly going to cut Russell Wilson, leaving a void on the depth chart. They don’t have the cap space to try to add a veteran. Moving up from No. 12 might require a future first-rounder that would hamper them down the road. So why not take a shot on McCarthy?
Look, this would be a reach by my rankings, but I could see why a team in the top 15 would talk itself into McCarthy. He has an intriguing skill set as a passer. He will test extremely well during combine workouts and impress coaches and front office execs in interviews,” Kiper wrote.
If given the chance, Payton can definitely bring out the best in McCarthy. With Wilson’s inconsistent output, there will be a lot of opportunities for the prospect to prove himself as the team’s starting quarterback. In the event he does, the Broncos will come out of the offseason as winners.
