The Denver Broncos are unlikely to land someone like a Caleb Williams at the 2024 NFL Draft since the AFC West franchise club is picking 12th overall. By the time the Broncos get their turn, Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye would have all likely been taken off the board.
With Russell Wilson looking like he’s already played his last game in Broncos uniform, it’s going to be interesting to see whether Denver will find his replacement via the draft. It could be JJ McCarthy of the Michigan Wolverines, who is said to have the interest of the team.
NFL Draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah, in explaining how difficult of a job projecting a prospect’s chances of working out in the NFL, said that McCarthy shined during simulated scenarios designed to find out how a quarterback would react to high-pressure moments.
Via Nick Kosmider of The Athletic:
That’s why it is imperative for evaluators to drill down on what a quarterback does when pressed into situations that more closely resemble the pro game. Jeremiah this week used Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, a prospect the Broncos will be evaluating closely this week, as an example. Playing for a 15-0 title-winning Michigan team with a nearly unstoppable rushing attack, McCarthy often found himself operating in ideal situations during his standout junior season in 2023. But as Jeremiah began isolating situations where the offensive burden was thrust upon McCarthy’s shoulders, he began to see those quick-processing attributes Payton and other coaches and general managers looking for a quarterback could covet.
Will The Denver Broncos Select JJ McCarthy At The 2024 NFL Draft?
McCarthy isn’t considered as a tier-1 QB prospect, but he is still garnering attention from NFL teams, including the Denver Broncos. He turned plenty of heads during the 2023 college football season as the main orchestrator of the deadly Michigan Wolverines attack on the field. In 2023, he passed for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns against four interceptions while completing 72.3 percent of his throws.
Granted that McCarthy benefited a lot from the Wolverines’ run-heavy attack, what Jeremiah saw in some of the drills the QB went through was encouraging, to say the least. While there remain plenty of question marks about McCarthy’s NFL potential, he’s apparently at least checking some important boxes.
