The New York Giants have put a lot of eggs in the basket of Daniel Jones. This also meant that they had to get him some pass-catching help. While getting people back from injury will help, the team also traded for ultra-talented tight end Darren Waller. The connection between the two was on display in the team’s most recent preseason game.
Daniel Jones And Darren Waller Connecting Well
Jones looked really sharp in this 2023 debut. He completed 8 of 9 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown in his only series. Waller was clearly one of his favorite targets. He hauled in three passes from Jones including one on a third down to keep the drive alive. Head coach Brian Daboll complimented the drive after the game. “Good series,” Daboll said. “Darren had some catches. Efficient.” It is worth noting that the touchdown went to third-round rookie Jalin Hyatt out of Tennessee.
Can The Giants Repeat Success From 2022?
It is going to be an uphill battle. The Giants face one of the toughest schedules in the league. Having to play the AFC East while also the Eagles and the Cowboys twice is an absolute gauntlet. However, there is some positive regression in store for this team. Saying the wide receiver room was decimated by injuries is an understatement. They will hopefully have better injury luck this season. On the flip side of the ball, Kayvon Thibodeaux looks primed to make a year-two leap and anchor this defense. It’s an uphill climb but this team isn’t void of talent.
If the Giants do have some success, expect it to be because the Daniel Jones-Darren Waller connection is one of the best in the league. The Giants could use some explosive plays in the passing game as well as a reliable target on third down. Waller checks all those boxes and could be primed for a huge season.
