The Dallas Cowboys are looking to move on from their disappointing loss to the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs. Despite a successful 2023 season, the Cowboys once again came up short when it mattered most. Not only that, but they have had to completely rebuild their defensive coaching staff after defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was hired as the head coach of the Washington Commanders.
Of course, changes to the coaching staff are not the only things that will be different in 2024. The Cowboys recently made the decision not to place the franchise tag on running back Tony Pollard. While a new contract may still be an option, all indications are that Dallas is ready to move on from the one-time Pro Bowl running back.
Former NFL Quarterback Robert Griffin III Names the Dallas Cowboys as Best Landing Spot for Saquon Barkley
Pollard rushed for over 1,000 yards for the second year in a row in 2023, but saw his efficiency drop off in a big way. He went from averaging 5.2 yards per carry in 2022 to just 4.0 last season. As a result, he he rushed for two fewer yards (1,005 compared to 1,007) on 59 more carries this past year compared to 2022.
As the Cowboys look ahead to the future of their running back position, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III made it known on social media that he believes Saquon Barkley would be the perfect fit:
The @dallascowboys should raid their rival’s closet and sign Saquon Barkley. Saquads is a 3 down back, who brings both flash and SUBSTANCE. The Quad God is still one of the most dynamic players in the NFL with the ball in his hands in the open field. Time for these stars to unite pic.twitter.com/t2cjWxYjTy

Ironically, the Giants also declined to use the franchise tag on Barkley for many of the same reasons the Cowboys declined to use it on Pollard.
Last season, Barkley rushed the ball 247 times for 962 yards and six touchdowns (a 3.9 yards per carry average). The year before, he had 295 carries for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns (a 4.4 yards per carry average).
Now, the Cowboys’ offensive line is lightyears better than the Giants’, so Barkley could very well put up big numbers again in Dallas. The question is whether or not owner Jerry Jones would be willing to pay him.
