The Dallas Cowboys are 3-3 and in serious danger for seeing their 2024 NFL season turn into a massive failure. How the team responds on Sunday against the injury-riddled San Francisco 49ers could very well determine the team’s attitude for the rest of the season. They are coming off of an embarrassing 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week Six before having a Bye Week last week and currently third in the NFC East.
Of course, one of the biggest storylines surrounding Dallas all season has been their lack of a run game. They currently rank dead last in the NFL with 77.4 rushing yards per game while Derrick Henry, the player Cowboys fans wanted Jerry Jones to sign, leads the league in rushing while playing for the Baltimore Ravens.
Jones defended his decision not to sign Henry on Tuesday by saying that he did not believe Henry would be having the season he is currently having if he had signed with the Cowboys.
And then he went on to throw head coach Mike McCarthy under the bus.
Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Says Mike McCarthy Has Designed a Bad Offense
While speaking on 105.3 the Fan in Dallas this morning, Jones stated that Henry probably would not have had a career year, such as the one he is currently experiencing in Baltimore, if he had signed with the Cowboys because McCarthy does not have a very creative offense.
“The types of things that we all think we should be looking at is we’re designing bad plays, or we’re designing bad concepts,” Jones said. “The facts are that there’s some of that but there’s also some of execution.”
Not only that, but Jones also took the side of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, who previously stated that CeeDee Lamb and the Cowboys wide receivers were running lazy routes.
While McCarthy defended his players yesterday when asked about Aikman’s comments, Jones said the criticism was fair: “Troy knows football. Troy is credible, very professional, very fair.”
This Is Likely Mike McCarthy’s Last Season as the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys
Prior to the start of the 2024 NFL season, Jones and the rest of the Cowboys’ brass decided not to give McCarthy a contract extension. He is entering the final year of his contract, and typically coaches are given an extension so that they do not feel more pressure than necessary in order to win.
But the Cowboys have not achieved their goals under McCarthy. Despite three 12-win seasons in a row, Dallas is just 1-3 in the NFL Playoffs since he was hired.
While McCarthy’s job is safe for the season, as Jones as stated that he does not anticipate making a change in-season, it does not seem very promising that he will be back next year, especially if the Cowboys cannot turn it around.
