The Dallas Cowboys are off to a troubling start in 2024. Through six weeks their record is 3-3 and they sit in third place in the NFC East. This coming after three consecutive 12-win seasons. Expectations have fallen short each year in the playoffs, failing to even get an appearance in the NFC Championship Game, let alone the Super Bowl.
After their .500 start, owner Jerry Jones commented on the future of Mike McCarthy as his head coach.
Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Makes Announcement About Mike McCarthy’s Future
The NFL season has only just begun, and 1 of its coaches have already lost their job. It wasn’t Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, however. In spite of McCarthy’s 3-3 start to this season, which includes two blowout home losses and another near-blowing out at home, there doesn’t appear to be a replacement plan:
Doug Pederson in Jacksonville? Probably. Nick Sirianni in Philadelphia? He’s almost making it easy for Eagles brass to fire him.
But the Cowboys have McCarthy as their man. And that’s not going to change.
After Sunday’s drubbing at the hands of the Lions—a 47-9 eyesore—owner and general manager Jerry Jones was asked about McCarthy’s status, and quickly shot down the idea of saving this season with a coaching change. He was asked about it again during his weekly radio appearance on 105.7 The Fan in Dallas.
He was blunt in his approach to McCarthy: “I won’t be making any others [coaching changes] during the season.”
Jerry Jones has made one coaching change during the season as the owner.
Despite the fact that in-season coaching changes have helped other struggling organizations, Jones has only changed coaches once since he became Cowboys owner, and he was not happy with the outcome.
After going 11-5 under Wade Phillips in 2009, the Cowboys made the change in 2010. However, they started 1-7 in 2010, mainly due to a linger injury to Tony Romo. A 5-3-0 record followed Phillips’ firing and the arrival of Jason Garrett.
