The Dallas Cowboys are going to be one of the most-watched teams in the NFL this season. While their popularity undoubtedly is spread throughout the country, they will be under the proverbial microscope for reasons outside of generally being liked: will they finally get passed the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs?
Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn left to become the head coach of division rival Washington Commanders. To replace him, head coach Mike McCarthy hired his formal rival in the NFC North, Mike Zimmer, who coached the Minnesota Vikings at the same time McCarthy was coaching the Green Bay Packers.
The Dallas Cowboys Coaches Are on 1-Year Contracts
After the Cowboys’ disappointing loss to the Packers, at home, in the 2023 NFL Playoffs, many thought that it was going to be enough for owner Jerry Jones to fire McCarthy as head coach. Jones, however, decided to allow McCarthy to coach the final year of his contract. That being said, 2024 is the last year of McCarthy’s contract. If the Cowboys do not make a noticeable improvement in the Playoffs, it could also be his last year as head coach, period.
Due to the uncertainty of McCarthy’s future in Dallas, Zimmer and all the other new coaches on staff were signed to one-year contracts, according to a report in The Dallas Morning News.
Which means, of course, that Zimmer does not have much time to improve a defense that let an inexperienced 9-8 Packers team put up 48 points on them in the postseason.
The Dallas Cowboys Are Encouraged to Sign Linebacker Jordyn Brooks in Free Agency
In a recent report by NFL insiders Dan Graziano and Jeremey Fowler of ESPN, it was reported that the Cowboys could look to boost their weak linebacker room by signing free agent Jordyn Brooks, a native of Dallas who played his college ball at Texas Tech:
“Dallas could be in the market for a linebacker after last season’s struggles at the position. Jordyn Brooks, a Dallas-area native and one of the top free agent linebackers, would be a good fit.”
Last season, Brooks had a career high 4.5 sacks while also racking up 111 total tackles. It was his third-consecutive season with over 100 tackles. In 2021, his second season, he led the NFL in solo tackles with 109 while having a combined 184 tackles.
