After getting dismantled by the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs, the Dallas Cowboys will have to face the reality of Dak Prescott’s contract in the offseason. The thing is, the franchise will have to pay around $60 million a year to keep their quarterback.
If the Cowboys do sign Prescott to a contract worth $60 million per year, that move will take over Joe Burrow’s five-year $275 contract extension with the Cincinnati Bengals as the biggest for a quarterback in the NFL.
That projected amount seems plausible, especially for a quarterback with Prescott’s talents. Just last season, the Cowboys star covered 4,516 yards, got 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Dallas, as a team, had a regular season record of 12-6, with Prescott leading them.
Although the Cowboys fell to Green Bay in the playoffs, Prescott threw more than 400 yards in that game. Setting aside his critical take on how he performed against the Packers, the quarterback’s ownership of the loss made him a better leader for Dallas.
Prescott currently has his contract extended until the end of 2024 at $59.4 million. With his performance last season, there’s a good chance a new contract will give him a bigger bag.
Dallas Cowboys To Face Dak Prescott’s Possible $60 Million Contract Next Season
Prescott’s situation is definitely one of the more interesting topics during the offseason. Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report dives into the Cowboy’s predicament and explains what can happen here:
“Dak Prescott had the best season of his career. But you also have Dallas who still has to pay CeeDee Lamb, they still have to pay Micah Parsons, and obviously, they’re gonna have to pay Dak Prescott. I’ve been on the record, I believe Dak Prescott will come in somewhere along the lines of $60 million per yer, potentially making him the highest-paid quarterback in football,” Schultz said.
If this situation falls down in Prescott’s favor, the landscape for quarterbacks and their worth in the NFL will surely be reset. It remains to be seen what the Cowboys will do and whether they’ll want to retain their star quarterback or not for next season.
