Dak Prescott is entering the final season of a four-year, $160 million deal he signed in 2021. He has a whopping $59.4 million cap hit in 2024, a huge financial obstacle for the Dallas Cowboys, who are looking to further improve their roster in hopes of a potential Super Bowl run.
The 30-year-old signal-caller is positive that he’ll be able to work out a new contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys that will land him another huge payday, even though it’ll be easier said than done.
“I’m definitely confident,” said Prescott when asked about getting an extension with the Dallas Cowboys soon via Patrik Walker. “Obviously, it helps the team. It’s important for the numbers. Both sides understand that. Everything’s great. It’ll happen.”
Extending Dak Prescott is not as easy as it seems for the Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones vowed for the team to go “all-in” on building a competitive roster this summer. However, since they’re over the salary cap by roughly $4 million, the Dallas Cowboys have to be creative financially.
Jones sounded less enthusiastic about giving Prescott a new lucrative extension, though, as he didn’t offer any specifics on their plans with the quarterback and the rest of the team.
“We don’t need to, but we can if everybody wants to solve it,” said Jones. “You can get in and get on the same page and see if you can come to an agreement. If you can’t, what we have in place works.”
Dak Prescott is coming off a productive 2023 campaign
Dak Prescott is coming off arguably the best regular season of his NFL career, as he managed to record 4,516 passing yards for 36 touchdowns and nine interceptions for a 69.5 completion percentage en route to a 12-5 record.
However, the Mississippi State product shrank against the Green Bay Packers during the wild-card round, recording two interceptions in a 48-32 defeat.
With Prescott under center, the Dallas Cowboys are now 2-5 in the playoffs and haven’t advanced past the divisional round, and Jerry Jones is getting tired of the lack of postseason success.
