The spring window of the transfer portal continues to zap the Colorado football program of talent, with two more players leaving the program on Wednesday. Colorado lost five players on Monday, including rotational defenders Chazz Wallace and Jaden Milliner-Jones. Offensive tackle Savion Washington also went portal hopping, leaving after starting nearly every game in 2023. On Tuesday, more top-tier talent left the Buffaloes, headlined by cornerback Cormani McClain.
McClain’s departure stirred strong emotions among Colorado Buffaloes’ fans, who directed their frustration toward the defender via ‘spaces’ on Twitter. In a surprising turn of events, McClain joined the conversation, shedding light on his decision to leave the soon-to-be Big 12 program.
Colorado Buffaloes DB Cormani McClain: Takes Aim at Coach Prime
Colorado football fans were outraged at the news of former five-star defender Cormani McClain entering the transfer portal. He became the fifth player to join the portal on Tuesday but carried the highest pedigree among the group. Colorado fans flooded social media, engaging in a discussion via ‘spaces’ on Twitter. McClain faced the music by joining, and near the end, he hinted why he was leaving Boulder, Colorado.
When asked to rate the depth of his departure on a scale of 1-10, McClain responded, “It was an 11. It ain’t on my end; it’s on their end.” This cryptic statement hints at Colorado and head coach Deion Sanders being the reason he will leave the program.

McClain liked a tweet on his new Twitter account directing blame at Sanders. The tweet suggested the defensive back left the program to join a “real program.”
Cormani said he tired of the circus and ready to go to a real program.

Under first-year head coach Deion Sanders, the Colorado Buffaloes became a transfer portal hub. Nearly every starter, including his sons, quarterback Shedeur Sanders and safety Shilo Sanders, came via the portal. However, many pundits disagreed with Coach Prime’s mentoring philosophy, including his approach to the previous players upon his arrival.
Colorado Football: CB Depth Chart
Cormani McClain, the top corner prospect in the class of 2023 per 247Sports, is leaving the Buffaloes after one season. The Lakeland, Florida native appeared in nine games during the 2023 campaign, recording 13 tackles, a TFL, and two passes defended. He enters the portal as one of the highest-regarded cornerbacks on the market.
McClain’s transfer affects the team’s long-term outlook, but the cornerback duo of Omarion Cooper and Travis Hunter will again patrol the secondary in 2024. Cooper spent two seasons with the Florida State Seminoles before transferring to the Colorado Buffaloes last fall. He posted 37 tackles, two TFLs, and a sack. Meanwhile, Hunter remains one of the best players in college football. The All-American had 30 tackles, two TFLs, and three interceptions last season. The two-way star also caught 57 passes for 721 yards and five touchdowns.
