College football has always had slightly different rules than the NFL. In the past few years, however, the sport has made an effort to change rules to a more pro-style game. Reports indicate the rules committee is discussing adding in a massive clock rule change, the two-minute warning.
College Football To Add A Two-Minute Warning?
According to The Athletic, rules officials are looking into adding the break at the two-minute mark. NCAA national coordinator of officials Steve Shaw told the publication, “With our change in the clock rules, we have a number of things that hinge on a certain period in the game, like the first down situation; if you had a definitive two-minute break, then you could flip all of your clock rules.” This change would impact how teams, especially those that are behind, handle late-game situations.
Good Move?
This move is all about advertising. When the NFL implemented the two-minute warning in 1942, it was because the officials on the field kept the time. It wasn’t broadcast to the stadium, so it let fans know there were only two minutes left in the game. Now, it is another slot for advertisers. The good thing about this move is it would make the end of the game more exciting. The stoppage gives teams an extra timeout, essentially making late-game drama more likely.
Will college football adopt this rule? It is in the works, and we could see it sooner than we think.
