The Cincinnati Bengals finished last in the AFC North with a 9-8 record and were eliminated from playoff contention.
Cincinnati has around $48 million in cap space and have a lot of free agents this offseason, but they cannot sign everyone.
The team will tender one of their free agents.
The Cincinnati Bengals have tendered their backup quarterback
Cincinnati extended an exclusive rights tender to Jake Browning.
An exclusive rights tender is for players with fewer than three years of accrued experience and can be retained for the minimum salary. Players can either sign the tender amount or negotiate a long-term contract with the team.
Browning filled in for the injured Burrow this season
Jake Browning took over as the starting quarterback for Cincinnati after Joe Burrow went down with a wrist injury in Week 11.
Browning completed 171 out of 243 pass attempts (70.4%) for 1,936 yards, 12 touchdowns, seven interceptions, 8.0 yards per attempt, 215.1 yards per game, a 98.4 passer rating, a 60.1 QBR, and a 4-3 record.
Browning received a glowing review from their director of player personnel
Browning received a glowing review from the director of player personnel, Duke Tobin.
“He did come in and really blossom and give us the opportunity to win and that’s what you want, especially when you’re working with your backup quarterback,” Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin said in Indianapolis this week. “You want somebody that can come in and give you the opportunity to win, and he did more than that and we were really impressed with the way that he attacked his role and his leadership when it came down to him being the guy. You could tell he is been in that role before and he was comfortable in that role and we were really impressed with a lot of the things that he did. In terms of keeping him, we plan for him to be with us. Yes.”
Cincinnati’s backup will be back for another season
