Chris Jones Could Lose Up to $9.5 Million Amid Chiefs’ Roster-Cut Deadline Move

The Chris Jones saga has taken a turn for the worse. It appears that the Kansas City Chiefs are calling the All-Pro DT’s bluff after Jones threatened not to report to the team until Week 8, which is basically the latest date he is required to rejoin the team if he wants to get paid this season. As it turns out, however, the Chiefs are having none of it.

It was reported on Tuesday that the Chiefs have decided to place on the reserve/did not report list (h/t Charean Williams of PFT). This is in line with the NFL’s roster-cut deadline, and this move means that Jones will not count toward the squad’s 53-man roster. Jones’ $19.5 million base salary for 2023 also won’t be included in Kansas City’s salary cap for the season.

Reports also indicate that there has been “no movement” in terms of a new contract between Jones and the Chiefs. This is the main reason why the 29-year-old has decided to hold out and refuse to report to camp, which has already cost him a lot of money in mandatory fines.

However, Jones could now lose up to $9.5 million in lost salaries and non-waivable fines if he lives up to his earlier promise of not reporting to work until Week 8. Chris Jones is obviously playing hardball here as he looks to secure a big-money extension. However, what is also clear is that the Chiefs aren’t moving an inch either.

It goes without saying that Jones is one of the most important players on the squad as the Chiefs look to defend their title in 2023. Players such as Jarran Reed and Darrick Nnadi will need to step in to try and fill the void, but in truth, there’s just no replacing what Chris Jones brings to the table.
