The heavy criticism of the Chiefs receiving group has reached a peak following the disastrous mistake made by wide receiver Kadarius Toney against the Green Bay Packers this week. While many (including Kansas City Coaches and Players) have argued that the officials shouldn’t have thrown the flag against Toney in an obvious offside situation, it can’t be denied that it was a huge mindless mistake to make late in the game.
There has been a lot of contention this season regarding Kansas City and one significant player finally came to their defense.
Chiefs QB Mahomes comes to the aid of his WRs
Following what seemed like an emotional rage after the game, superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes has finally come to the defense of his receiving corps.
“Just be you,” Mahomes said he told Toney, whose offside penalty late against the Bills cost the Chiefs a remarkable go-ahead 49-yard touchdown after a lateral by elite tight end Travis Kelce. “That’s all you can do in life or in this league. You’re going to make mistakes. Stuff’s going to happen in your life. How do you accept that adversity and get past it and do it the right way?
“You make one mistake, that’s not going to define you. It’s going to be how you respond to that mistake.”
Head Coach Andy Reid has already established that Toney will not see a cut in playing time after a disastrous slip in form including the devastating penalty. Toney was traded to Kansas City last season after he built a reputation for mistakes with the New York Giants. Although Toney has been targeted this season, the entire receiving group has struggled intensely this season.
“All the receivers know I believe in them,” he said. “That’s just kind of how I roll. If you’re in this locker room and I see how hard you work, I’m going to trust in you in big moments and I’m going to give you chances to go out there and make plays and for everything I know their mindset seems like it’s in a good spot and they just want to go out there and continue to get better and better.
I can see that by how hard they’re working out here. And I feel like if we can just continue to push through the grind that we’ll end up on the other side of it as the season goes on.”
While the receivers have certainly underperformed, a lot of the criticism toward the receivers both internally and externally is related to frustration. Kansas City has lost two games in a row and only holds a one game lead over the up-and-coming Broncos. Kansas City has a tough series of games coming up to close the season and holding the number one overall seed is no longer the biggest concern in Kansas City.
