A lot of the negative rhetoric surrounding the Cowboys over the past week has been how poor the pass catchers are on the team. And I know right now things look a little bleak, but there should be reason for optimism. While others are concerned, I am excited about the Cowboys’ passing game because of what I know CeeDee Lamb will do this year. With what he’s showing in training camp and his natural ability, I am more than confident Ceedee Lamb will have a special year this year.
The first thing that makes me so confident in CeeDee Lamb’s potential this year is Kellen Moore openly saying that CeeDee will see a lot of touches. I know this seems obvious, and it should, but I feel like Kellen Moore has had a legitimate problem with this. Making a concerted effort to give one of the more dynamic players in the league is the easiest way to ensure he does what he’s capable of. Amari Cooper even said that CeeDee would be an elite number 1 WR if Kellen Moore decides to feature him in the offense.
Something that slipped through the cracks is that after this season, CeeDee will be able to get his first extension. This adds an extra incentive to CeeDee and will light a fire under him. Getting paid handsomely means more than a dollar amount for many players. It becomes a pride thing that players feel defines them in a way. It’s why you see the market be reset every year for players that may not be the best player at their position. This potential will only make CeeDee hungrier and prove that he’s as good, if not better, than any WR out there.
And by all accounts, CeeDee has taken this fire into training cam. CeeDee has been tearing it up, which should come as a surprise to nobody. He’s put on a clinic showcasing his route running and overall ability. Lamb had a fantastic back shoulder catch over Malik Hooker earlier this week during camp, which sums up how good CeeDee has been so far in camp. You can find that here.
The most important thing that will help CeeDee break out will be the man throwing him the ball. Last year Dak was behind the eight ball for most of the year. He had missed a lot of time before the season with that nagging shoulder issue, and he had missed most of the offseason programs rehabbing his ankle. Then from week seven on, he was dealing with a calf injury that he never seemed to recover from. This was the biggest reason for the Cowboys’ decrease in efficiency later in the year.
But coming into this year, Dak is healthy and ready to put up big numbers. Dak had a real offseason, which benefits CeeDee tremendously for multiple reasons. The obvious one is that now Dak should be more consistent and just a better overall QB, which would boost CeeDee Lamb. But the other one is that now Ceedee and Dak have an entire camp to build up the chemistry a number 1 WR needs with his QB.
CeeDee will have more responsibility this year than he’s ever had. Not only will he not be rattled, but he will rise to the occasion and ease the minds of Cowboys nation worrying about the receiving core. With the eventual return of Michael Gallup, fans should temper their fears and trust that this offense will still be one of the better in the league.
