USC quarterback Caleb Williams made his decision on the 2024 NFL Draft Monday afternoon. One would have to hope Williams, known for painting his nails before big moments, didn’t swallow too much paint when he made his final decision on his plans for the 2024 season at Monday’s deadline to declare for the draft.
Williams’ timing likely had Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles biting his nails before Williams’ Monday afternoon announcement. The future of the Bears’ franchise and its draft plans were riding on the 22-year-old quarterback’s decision to stay in school or head for the NFL.
Caleb Williams declares for the 2024 NFL Draft
Per Williams’ X account, Williams announced he would declare for the 2024 NFL Draft:
“Since I was 10, all I ever wanted to do was to play football. The journey would be empty without the people who have supported and loved me. I will Fight On forever and rep Hornsdown4Life. I’m ready to do whatever it takes. I am officially declaring for the NFL Draft.”

The Chicago Bears were waiting on Williams’ decision
It’s unclear if the Bears will draft Williams with the number one pick in the NFL draft in April. The Bears will need to scout and decide if their current quarterback, Justin Fields, is better than Williams or any other quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Most analysts and NFL scouts believe Williams is the best quarterback in the 2024 class. Some even believe William’s playmaking style gives him the upside of being a Patrick Mahomes-like quarterback.
Because of the hype surrounding Williams, the Bears are expected to receive multiple first-round picks if they trade down from the number one spot. If Williams chose to stay in college for the 2024 season, the Bears would have lost unfathomable leverage this offseason.
Williams’ decision Monday afternoon upends the disaster scenario for Poles, where the Bears wouldn’t be able to receive as much compensation for the number one pick if they chose to build around Fields in the draft.
Now that Williams’ decision for the draft has been made, his fate rests in the hands of Poles.
