Tre’Davious White’s 2023 campaign was cut short because he ruptured his Achilles in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins. Because he’s undergoing rehab after suffering his second major injury in three seasons, the Buffalo Bills are in a major dilemma about his long-term future with the squad.
Because the Buffalo Bills are currently projected to be almost $54 million over the salary cap, per Spotrac, they would have to let go of several players to be under that before the start of the new league year in mid-March, and Tre’Davious White figures to be one of the top cap casualties.
Should the Buffalo Bills pull the plug on the two-time Pro Bowler? Or is there a way to keep him on the roster while increasing their cap savings?
Buffalo Bills’ options regarding Tre’Davious White
Should the Buffalo Bills waive Tre’Davious White, the team could save more than $6 million in cap space. However, according to Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic, the team holds the 29-year-old in high regard, so they might not be keen on letting him go.
“General manager Brandon Beane said after the season their focus was to get White healthy and then go from there, but without clear knowledge when White will be healthy, it’s tough for the Bills to make that call when free agency rolls around,” said Buscaglia. “And just to make it even more difficult, White is due a $1.5 million roster bonus a few days after the start of the new league year in March.”
With that said, Buscaglia suggested that the Buffalo Bills can keep White by signing him to an extension that would convert his 2024 earnings (base salary + roster bonus) into a fully guaranteed signing bonus while prorating his salary by adding non-guaranteed years through 2027, as doing so would bring more than $7 million in cap savings while giving White enough time to recover from his injury.
Buffalo Bills can’t wait to see Tre’Davious White back at full strength
After losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round, Brandon Beane said that the Buffalo Bills’ focus was to ensure that Tre’Davious White is 100 percent healthy next season.
Since Achilles injuries typically take around 10–12 months to heal, it’s safe to say that Tre’Davious White will miss the first few games of the 2024 season. In the meantime, Rasul Douglas and Christian Benford will hold it down at the cornerback position.
