SEC Media days got underway on Monday morning in Atlanta and Brian Kelly was the first coach to take the stage. The last media day that Kelly was a part of was in 2009 at Big East Media days when he was the Cincinnati head coach. Here were some key takeaways from Kelly’s SEC Media days segment:

On Why He Belongs At LSU:

Brian Kelly was asked on why he belongs at LSU

“I think fit is about the ability to run a program at the highest level. I’ve done it for 32 years. I’ve had success at Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Central Michigan, wherever I’ve been. Then developing players, player development. Those are the most important things. And I don’t think that needs to be geographical, in a sense. I’ve gotten to love where I’m at in Baton Rouge. I love the people. They love football. They love family and they love food. And that fits me really well. I guess I should have been in the South all along.”

If LSU Was At a Funding Disadvantage for NIL Deals:

LSU takes over Times Square on NIL Day
Brian Kelly was asked if LSU was at a disadvantage when it comes to NIL deals

“I don’t know that we don’t have as many funds. Nobody has given me any documentation that we’re behind. I feel very comfortable as I stand here talking to you what we’re doing relative to NIL is as competitive as anybody else. I don’t feel like we’re being outbid by anybody.”

On Facing Florida State and Having Played Them at Notre Dame:

LSU will take on Florida State in New Orleans to open their season

“A lot of them carryover, we’re relying on that film, player evals, there’s a lot of familiar notes that we can go back to, but you throw a lot of that stuff out because it’s the opener.”

    On Defensive End, BJ Ojulari:

BJ Ojulari will be a focal point for the Tigers’ defensive line

“He’s what you want to represent your program. His traits are outstanding. He’s a leader. We’re going to talk about his ability to rush the passer, and his prominence there, but I could talk more about the person than the player.”

    On SEC Schedule:

Brian Kelly was asked on the difficulty of facing the SEC schedule

“It’s how you train your team. You have to be ready for battle through December. You have to have the end in mind first.”

On His QB Battle This Fall:

“1. Take care of the ball. 2. Get ball to the playmakers. 3. QB has to make plays. He’ll have to hit those three notes.”
