The NFL has now had back to back week in the playoffs of record breaking viewership, as the 2024 playoffs is et to become the most viewed playoffs in NFL history. Last week for the Wild Card Weekend, the viewership was off the charts, and for the Divisional round it went to the next level.
The NFL continues to prove why it is the king of viewership in America, bringing in tens of millions of viewers for each game of the Divisional round, and now it is looking like this 2024 playoffs is going to bring in the most viewers the league has ever had. If the numbers continue to rise for Championship weekend and the Super Bowl, this year will bring in the most viewers ever.
NFL Viewership For Baltimore Ravens Vs. Houston Texans ABC/ESPN
On Saturday the first game featured the Baltimore Ravens against the Houston Texans. Although the game got out of hand late with a final score of 34-10, it brought in 31.8 million viewers making it the most watched NFL game ever broadcasted by ESPN. The record breaking game for ESPN was a sign for things to come for the divisional weekend as more records kept getting broken.
Lamar Jackson and C.J Stroud put on a great show in the first half, but the Ravens absolutely took control of the game in the second half. That may have to do with a little rust the Ravens players had from not playing for almost three weeks, but it could also do with the blitz packages the Texans were using to get after Lamar. Either way, the game brought it in 31.8 million viewers and shattered the record for the biggest broadcast ESPN has ever gotten before.
San Francisco 49ers Vs. The Green Bay Packers Fox
The Sunday night game featured an amazing matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers. The game went back and forth with both teams looking like they would come out on top until Jordan Love through a bad interception to lose the game with the 49ers coming out on top 24-21.
The game brought in 37..5 million viewers continuing the record breaking weekend in terms of viewership, and that makes sense as the game was sensational and both of these teams have huge historic fan bases. Last years 2023 Saturday night game brought in 28 million so this jump is astronomical to go up by almost 10 million more viewers.
Detroit Lions Vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers NBC
The first of the two Sunday games featured the Detroit Lions against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Lions punched their ticket to the NFC Championship after defeating the Bucs 31-23. This was another entertaining game, and with Detroit not being in this position in 32 years it was sure to bring in huge viewership.
The game brought in 40.4 million viewers to see the Lions go further than they have in decades. Although this game was only up by a million viewers from last years Sunday day game, this highlights that some of these smaller market teams cam still bring in 40 million viewers.
Record Breaking Kansas City Chiefs Vs. Buffalo Bills
The Kansas City Chiefs behind Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce defeated the Buffalo Bills, as they always do in the playoffs, but the game brought in the most viewers in a divisional round matchup ever! The rivalry game brought it a whopping 50.3 millions views making it the most watched divisional game ever.
This game brought in almost 5 million more views than last years Sunday night matchup and it highlights how many more fans are tuning in for big time playoff football. We should see these numbers continue to rise in the Championship weekend as these two games have huge fan bases and are set to be amazing matchups. Overall, the NFL brought in their most viewers ever in a Divisional weekend showing that the league’s reach is still growing and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop.
