Every New York Giants fan has had their eye on Daniel Jones in this 2023 NFL season. He has missed the Giants’ last three games due to a neck injury.
The good news is that there are positive signs that he is healing from this injury according to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. Dunleavy reports that Jones was cleared for contact yesterday before the game against the New York Jets.
Unfortunately, for the Giants, they could have really used him yesterday. QB Tyrod Taylor was filling in for Jones for the third straight week.
However, he suffered a rib injury in the middle of yesterday’s game that sent him to a local hospital. As a result, QB Tommy DeVito had to step in his absence. It was a performance to forget by both quarterbacks considering the Giants set a record for fewest passing yards in one game.
Why Did Daniel Jones Not Play Yesterday?
Some people may be wondering why Jones did not play yesterday if he was cleared for contact before the game against the Jets. The answer seems to be that the Giants were being extra cautious with this injury.
Jones’ neck injury meant that he had left-side weakness in his non-throwing arm. There was an increased risk of Jones reinjuring his neck with this weakness. If that happened, he would have to start the healing process all over again.
What Will the New York Giants Do Now?
After a heartbreaking loss in Week 8 to the New York Jets, the Giants will prepare to go to Las Vegas to take on the Raiders. At the time of writing, it looks like there is a good chance that Daniel Jones could be ready to go by next week’s kickoff.
Is it too little too late for the New York Giants? That answer is likely yes.
They are sitting with a 2-6 record and are currently two games behind for the last NFC wild card spot. With nine games to go, they would have to finish the season with a 7-2 record to get themselves back over .500.
They still have to play the Philadelphia Eagles twice, who are currently 7-1. Plus, there is one more game against the Dallas Cowboys on the road in two weeks. The Giants lost 40-0 in their first meeting this season with the Cowboys.
