Bill Belichick may have failed to land a coaching job in the NFL after his New England Patriots exit, but it doesn’t mean he won’t be involved in football in some way. Just ask his son, Steve Belichick.
While Belichick won’t be coaching an NFL team in the 2024 season, Steve sees his father still doing something related to the sport, perhaps being on TV or sharing his opinion on the performances of teams and players in some other ways.
Bill Belichick’s Current Status After New England Patriots Exit, Atlanta Falcons Miss
After his Patriots exit, Belichick was heavily linked to the Atlanta Falcons job. He even went deep to the interview process, leading many to believe that he wouldn’t be jobless for long.
However, the Falcons surprised a lot of people when they decided to take another route, hiring Raheem Morris to be their heads coach instead of Belichick.
Despite the shocking turn of events, however, Steve doesn’t think his father was too bothered by what transpired.
“I think he’s good, you know?” said Steve, who left the Patriots after his dad’s departure and joined the Washington Huskies as their defensive coordinator (via Boston Globe).
“You let the stuff roll off your back and move forward. He doesn’t dwell unless we lost the game and need to get on some guys, but eventually you’ve got to turn the page. Honestly I wasn’t too involved in any of that stuff. He did his thing, I do my thing, and that was kind of that.”
What’s Next for Bill Belichick?
When asked about his dad’s hobbies and what could be the next step for the legendary tactician as Belichick looks to sit and watch from outside in the 2024 season, Steve said that his father still likes to talk about football.
While there are some other activities Belichick will likely do during his time outside football, Steve noted that he sees him going on TV or doing some other media stuff.
“I would say his hobby would still be to critique football. He was excited when I came out here because he got to evaluate the scheme last year, evaluate the players last year, and I’m sure he’ll come out here to do some stuff. The guy just loves football, so there’s definitely that element,” Steve shared.
Belichick’s son added, “He’s definitely pursuing some other kind of stuff whether it’s TV or a regular on the Green Light or whatever.”
For what it’s worth, even NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell shared his expectation before that Bill Belichick would still be involved in football even after his failure to land a coaching gig. That is also the ongoing belief around the NFL.
Coaching is also not out of the option, especially with some teams (like the Dallas Cowboys) potentially making a change in the middle of the season should their teams really struggle.
With that said, fans should still expect to see Belichick more often than not during the 2024 campaign.
