On Sunday afternoon, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots received devastating news for their 2023 season. It could spell doom for Belichick’s tenure with the Patriots.
The Patriots scored an impressive victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football. However, the early December win was only the third for Belichick’s team. A 3-10 record was not what Patriots owner Robert Kraft had in mind this offseason.
Bill Belichick has been eliminated from the playoffs in early December
The win staved off playoff elimination Thursday night. But the Patriots couldn’t escape their fate this weekend. The Patriots were mathematically eliminated from the postseason after the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Indianapolis Colts.
Week 14 is now the earliest the Patriots have been eliminated from the playoffs in the Belichick era. That could end up costing Belichick his job this offseason.
Per USA Today, Kraft wrote a letter to Patriots season ticket holders this offseason after the team failed to make the playoffs for the 2022 season:
“We can assure you that no one in our organization is satisfied with the results from this past season. In the weeks ahead, we will be making critical evaluations of all elements of our football operation as we strive to improve and return to the playoffs next year.”
The Patriots didn’t make the playoffs. And they didn’t make it to Christmas before they were eliminated from having a chance at the postseason.
One would assume Kraft won’t be happy with the outcome of this season’s failure to make the postseason. The Patriots showing this season has made it easier for Kraft to part ways with his six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach.
