The Chicago Bears could’ve turned their whole week around with this game against the Kansas City Chief. Instead, they played one of the worst games in Week 3.
The Bears allowed scores on seven consecutive positions, had two turnovers, and produced only 203 yards of offense. To add more insult to injury, literally, their already injured list just grew a little more. They fell to the Chiefs 41-10, their 13th loss in a row dating back to last season.
You read that right. Last. Season.
Kansas City Took Control
The defending Super Bowl champions went into the game determined, cruising into a 34-0 lead at halftime, scoring four touchdowns and two field goals on six straight possessions following the first drive of the game. Kansas City tacked on 20 points with 3 minutes left in the first half, and by the fourth quarter, were leading by 41-0.
Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered an ankle injury just months after suffering a sprain ahead of the Super Bowl in which his team would win.
Mahomes was seen limping at the end of the second quarter after Chicago Bears defensive end Yannick Ngakoue fell onto his right ankle. He returned to the field after halftime with his ankle wrapped in loads of tape, and went on to break the record for the fastest quarterback to pass for 25,000 yards in NFL history.
Patrick Mahomes was able to complete 20 of 27 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 28 yards on three carries all in the first half. He exited the game midway through the third quarter after tossing a 3-yard touchdown to Travis Kelce, bringing the Chiefs score to 41-0.
Chicago Bears Continue to Struggle
Bears quarterback Justin Fields was 11-for-22 for 99 yards with an interception and one touchdown in his embarrassing loss against the Chiefs on Sunday. He also had a team-high 11 rushes for 47 yards against the Chiefs defense.
This all comes after the abrupt resignation of Bears defensive coordinator Alan Williams, citing “the need to take care of my health and family.”
This probably was one of the worst games the Chicago Bears have played in years. After ending last season with a 10-game losing streak, you’d think something would snap in them to change things up a bit and start winning some games. The Chiefs looked like the 2023 Super Bowl Champions, even after a slow start to their season, but the Bears haven’t done anything in the last three weeks to improve their performance.
Coach Matt Eberflus was really at a loss for words when trying to answer some questions post-game, but understandably so, his team is playing some of the worst football in the league. He tried to find some positives with it.
“There have been some good things,” he told the media. “There have been some good drives. We saw some last week. We saw some in the second half here. So there have been good things with that.
“This is a new football team. We’ve got 30-some new guys who are coming together that are playing the game together for the first time for these three games. So there’s a process to that.”
But shouldn’t the process be done over the course of training? If you want your team to succeed, you have to coach them to greatness from the beginning and make them a team right from the jump.
There are some positive defensive notes for the Bears, however. The defense was able to get their first takeaways of the season with interceptions by backup rookie safety Quindell Johnson and linebacker Jack Sanborn. Those did come off Chiefs backup QB Blaine Gabbert, though.
Even wide receiver Chase Claypool, who had a 15-yard reception in the game, wants to figure out the bigger picture for the Bears as they progress through the season.
“We don’t really know what’s happening,” he said. “I feel like we’re putting in the work during the week and it’s just not really translating to Sunday…”
The Bears are 0-3 for the first time since 2016, where they went 3-14. They welcome the Denver Broncos, who just got annihilated by the Miami Dolphins 70-20 to Soldier Field on Sunday, Oct. 1.
