Houston Cougars at Memphis Tigers Houston comes into the game 2-3, and 0-1 in the conference.  The Houston Cougars at Memphis Tigers game is a battle of expectations.  The Memphis Tigers as 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.  Memphis has been beating teams it was expected to beat, and Houston has not.  In defense of the Cougars, Kansas was not supposed to be an undefeated team at this point.  And Texas Tech after beating Houston continued on to beat the University of Texas two weeks later. This game we’ll find out if Memphis is as good as their record,…

Studs and Duds from Memphis vs Temple The Tigers couldn’t get plan A to work, so they went further down the alphabet, and they settled on Plan D, defense.  The opportunistic Defense really kicked in once the Tigers got a late lead, and consecutive interceptions iced the game.  The Final score of 24-3 does not reflect the close-fought game at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium on Saturday.  Memphis beat Temple, but it was close most of the way. Stud: Wardalis Ducksworth It seemed every big series there would be a “credit for hurrying” for Wardalis Ducksworth. The Tigers defensive lineman seemed…

The Memphis Tigers face their first home conference game of the season Saturday 11 AM.  The Temple Owls bring their 2-2 record into the Liberty Bowl for the first conference game for both squads. The Memphis Tigers vs Temple Owls preview must focus on both the strengths and the weaknesses of two untested, young squads. Temple Owls Preview (Offense) The Temple Owls are led by a familiar quarterback name.  Noted reporter Pete Thamel said the Temple QB starter would be E.J. Warner(son of Hall of Famer QB Kurt Warner).  He and the Temple Owls will face a ferocious Memphis Tigers…

Memphis Tigers Studs and Duds, (and a few notes about North Texas, too).  What to love and what to love about this last display of Memphis Tigerdom.  (Ok, it’s a word now, so here’s the rest).  Stud, Xavier Cullens How about an Interception for a touchdown? A pick – six for the Tiger DB. What not enough for you? What about a timely fumble recovery- at the North Texas 8? Yes, thank you very much. North Texas had their quarterback Austin Aune light up the Tiger’s defense for 371 yards.  Aune threw 2 picks, though, that turned the game against…

The main focus of the Memphis vs North Texas Preview should be Defense. Neither one of these teams can get off the field on third down.  North Texas Mean Green, through 2 games, is 116 of 129 in FBS third-down defense.   The Memphis Tigers are 128 of the 129 listed.  Whichever team can get off the field to bring in their high-powered offense will win this game. Memphis vs North Texas Preview (Offense) Seth Henigan is justifying the coaches’ decision to bench Grant Gunnell and make him the start.  The same Grant Gunnell that is challenging Layne Hatcher.  QB Layne…

Takeaways from Memphis Tigers game 1st Takeaway is that Seth Henigan is pretty darn good.  It’s a family column so I’ll go with that.  Takeaways from the Memphis Tigers game always should mention Seth Henigan.  There are other programs with good quarterbacks. For example, there are a couple of other programs that have 0 interceptions. Their names are Ohio State, Georgia, and USC, you might have heard of them.  So, yeah, Memphis is feeling pretty good about this position right now. The @American_Conf Week 3 @TicketSmarter Honor Roll QB Ben Bryant | @GoBearcatsFB QB Holton Ahlers | @ECUPiratesFB QB Seth…

Memphis Tigers beat Arkansas State 44-32 in a loud and enthusiastic Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium Saturday night.  Despite a defense that Arkansas State solved early and often, the defense plus a  loud stadium helped stymie a late drive by Arkansas State.  The Memphis Tigers beat Arkansas State, in part because Quarterback Seth Henigan finished with 19 completions in 28 attempts.  His passing totaled 360 yards and 3 touchdowns, adding 1 more on a quarterback keeper (pictured above). Arkansas State opened the scoring with a Seth Blackman 51-yard touchdown to Seydou Traore.  Blackman was stellar all night, he threw for 275…

Memphis Tigers vs Arkansas St Preview Memphis Tigers are 1-1 with an opening loss to Mississippi State on the road.  Arkansas State is also 1-1, having lost to a highly ranked Ohio State team 45-12  in Columbus last week.  The Memphis Tigers have had to wait until week 3 until their home opener this year.   The crowds should be modest but energetic, and the home atmosphere should be rowdy enough at a 6 P.M. start to fire up this young squad. Memphis Tigers come in hot after a pivotal win The Tigers overmatched Navy in the victory last week.  Seth…

Four Takeaways (From Tiger Victory) Takeaway Number 1.  The  Memphis Tigers passing game is still strong. 415 yards, 24-34, no interceptions. The second straight week with no turnovers for QB Seth Henigan, though 2 fumbles the Tigers recovered. Third down conversion was better, and the first long drives of the season. Joseph Scates (see this summary about his transfer)  caught a 79 yard touchdown pass. Takeaway Number 2. Tiger secondary still ok, bend but doesn’t break. Quindell Johnson led the team in tackles a second straight week- an astounding 11 solo. That’s great for him, but for a defense, the…

Memphis Tigers Navy Score was Memphis 37, Navy 13. Today at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD,  the Memphis Tigers faced Navy. Behind a tremendous passing game by Seth Henigan, throwing to 8 different receivers, Memphis won. Memphis jumped out to a quick lead on a quick drive.  Navy early in the game had some success running, and it was a balanced game for the first half.  At the end of the first half Seth Henigan was 15-22 for 205 yards.  He looked pretty efficient in the last drive of the half, but the Tigers ran out of time,…
