Best of NIL this year A Thanksgiving tradition: the annual J-Academy NIL awards.  I’ve looked at daily summations of NIL deals since July so you don’t have to (you’re welcome, Jon Lovitz voice).  The hours watching bland ads, wooden performances, and miscast parts…. but these are the BEST. Best newcomer in a Comedy Performance. In a bold move, Arkansas QB KJ Jefferson did not show up until the second reel (about 12 in).  Despite a linebacker’s signature glare, KJ Jefferson is a QB but fired the football like one tough QB.  I’d say the best pro comp would be Terence…

North Alabama  Memphis North Alabama brought in a 1-9 record and did not improve it.  Memphis Tigers on Senior Day; dominated in a 59-0 win.  They were dialed in on passing all day and showed their talent advantage in every phase.  Not only did the Memphis Tigers pitch a shutout; they kept the North Alabama Lions out of their territory all day.  Memphis gets to 6-Wins, an incredible 9th straight year of being bowl-eligible.  (Technically didn’t play in the Hawaii Bowl last year, it was a last-minute cancellation from Covid tests from the opponent.) North Alabama  Memphis Studs and Duds…

Everyone in college football is talking about Name Image Likeness (NIL) and it’s effect on college sports, especially NCAA football. So is the NIL top-10 a determination of AP-top-10? Some articles herald it as a necessary growth part of NCAA football,  and other articles claim it is a possible pitfall.  But does college football NIL-top-10 compare to the on-the-field results, the AP-top-10? NIL Deals Gone Wrong When a sponsor signs an NIL deal, what are they paying for? Are you paying for the athlete showing up?  Are you fully “paid up” as a sponsor if the athlete gets there, goes through training camp, and quits then?  What about first week?  Halfway through the season? NIL Deals Gone Wrong (Some Legal Paper to clear your palate) No, seriously, an excellent study by St.Louis University Law student Brian Ahle.  The subject is the “retirement” from college football by LSU quarterback Miles Brenner, who took over from (now) Cincinatti Bengal QB Joe Burrow in 2019. …

Tulsa vs Memphis 4 Studs and Duds Tulsa vs Memphis 4 Studs and Duds: starting with a Stud.  Jaylon Allen (and the entire D, to be honest) returned to be the dominant force he has been early in the year.  All year he has been a force, in the top 3 in tackles most games.  But this game he put punishment on the quarterback many times. The Tiger Defense held Tulsa without a touchdown until very late in the game. Only Keylon Stokes grabbed a touchdown, but the rest of the Tulsa offense was ineffective.   But Jaylon Allen, along with …

7 Weird NIL deals This month’s focus on NIL deals is on group NIL deals.  Some of the groups are specific causes, some of the groups are for whole teams. Some of the deals are so funny it kills… others are so serious trying to prevent deaths.  Here’s that list. 7.  Our first weird NIL deal is with Blood Sugar.  More specifically, a company that sponsors athletes with blood sugar issues.  Dexcom  U is a group sponsorship of 14 athletes who use that product to control their blood sugar.  Type 2 diabetes and other diseases can cause blood sugar imbalances,…

Tulsa vs Memphis Preview The Stakes: could be a preview of the future for Coach Ryan Silverfield.  Unfortunately, the schedule lined up very badly for the Memphis Tigers.  They were facing hot teams at home and dangerous teams on the road.  Adds up to a four-game win streak and hopefully, the Tulsa vs Memphis Preview is not a preview of a long, long offseason for the third-year coach. Tulsa vs Memphis Preview; Tulsa’s Defense Can we please…. talk about Tulsa’s defense?  It’s… a problem.  Last week they were exposed by Tulane’s running attack.  The Memphis Tigers were too, but Tulane…

Memphis vs UCF StudsandDuds Among the StudsandDuds, first Stud was definitely the Memphis offense.  Led by Quarterback Seth Henigan once again, for Mempis he was the best rusher and of course the best passer.  He rushed 16 times for 69 yards, and passed 26-39 for 284 yards.  The playcalling was creative and several new gadgets were inserted into the schemes. Despite a few drops, the Memphis offense seemed capable all night. Among the StudsandDuds the offense was definitely the Stud. RB Brandon Thomas didn’t gain big yards but he was dependable as always around the goal line, punching one in.…
