There are plenty of smoke and mirrors usually involved when it comes to the NFL Draft, but this fact doesn’t apply to the Atlanta Falcons. The team has made it clear that they won’t move forward with Desmond Ridder as their starter after his abysmal 2023 performance under Arthur Smith.
While the 2024 class has plenty of high-ceiling signal callers that they can mold into a superstars, three outstanding prospects in Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels can completely transform their team.
With this in mind, the clear course of action is to attempt to trade up from the #8 spot to get into the top three. The question now lies in whether Raheem Morris Terry Fontenot would actually be willing to push through with these changes.
Atlanta Falcons must consider moving up for Williams. Maye, or Daniels
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s D. Orlando Ledbetter wrote about the quality of the three top QBs in the 2024 NFL Draft class.
He mentioned that the team should consider dealing with the Chicago Bears if he thinks that his elite passing talent and physical tools would be worth more than his spotty injury history. However, it wouldn’t be strange to see the team sacrifice at least a future first-round pick in exchange for his draft rights.
He also argued for trading up to get Daniels and Maye. The LSU field general won this year’s Heisman for a reason. If the Atlanta Falcons think his numbers (3,812 yards, 40 passing touchdowns, 1,134 rushing yards, and 10 rushing touchdowns) weren’t simply padded by an overpowered receiving corps, then it would make sense to negotiate with either the Washington Commanders or the New England Patriots.
The same rings true for Maye. He’s been great for the Tar Heels last season despite the team having a pretty mediocre record. His 3,608 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions can transform the team into an exciting squad in the NFC South.
What if the Falcons don’t decide to trade up?
If the Falcons don’t decide to move up, Ledbetter writes that there are plenty of other QBs they can target:
If the Falcons don’t trade up and keep the eighth overall pick, Washington’s Anthony Penix Jr., Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy and Oregon’s Bo Nix are in the next tier of quarterbacks. Most analysts do not considered any of them worthy of the eighth overall pick. “I would probably lean more toward McCarthy,” [NFL draft analyst Daniel] Jeremiah said.
It’s interesting to note that many draft analysts see a huge divide between the top three picks and the rest of the playing field. However, it’s important to note that there’s more to quality QB play than just finding the right talent. Coaching and proper scheming will be important in developing a QB into a winner. Just ask Brock Purdy about it.
It will be interesting to see where the Atlanta Falcons will go in the 2024 NFL Draft. Fans will be hoping that they finally find their franchise cornerstone that will hopefully lead them back to the Super Bowl.
