Much like Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid couldn’t believe the controversial ending of their Week 14 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
The Bills edged out the Chiefs, 20-17, though a case could be made that the reigning Super Bowl champions should have won it after an incredible lateral pass from Travis Kelce that led to a Kadarius Toney touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
However, the touchdown was waived off after a flag was thrown because Toney was lined up offsides. It deflated the Chiefs and even angered Mahomes during the game, with the penalty eventually killing all the momentum they had as Josh Allen and Co. escaped with the victory.

In his postgame presser following the contest, Reid didn’t hold back and questioned the officiating. He highlighted that it’s the first time he experienced such call without a warning, and it couldn’t have come at the worst possible time for his team.
“It was a heck of a football game down to the end. Very disappointed that it ended the way it did. Normally, I never use any of this as an excuse, but normally I get a warning before something like that happens in a big game,” Andy Reid said of the Toney penalty, per Sports Illustrated.
The Chiefs tactician added, “A bit embarrassing in the National Football League for that to take place.”
What Did Patrick Mahomes Say Over Wild Kansas City Chiefs Loss?
As mentioned, Patrick Mahomes was heated during and after the game over the controversial call. While Andy Reid’s reaction is a bit calmer, the Kansas City Chiefs QB didn’t hold back at all in his criticism of the referees.
Mahomes admitted that the defeat was “tough to swallow” after everything that happened.
“Let us play the game. Then whatever happens happens. That’s why last week, I didn’t say anything. Let us play. You want it to be about your team and their team — and see what happens. I want to go play… then see what happens at the end Then, I can live with the results,” Mahomes pleaded in frustration.
“The flag today was tough. Offensive offsides. You point to the ref, you’re good or not good. You have a discussion. That’s the ref’s job. For him to throw that flag, no explanation or anything. I saw the picture. He’s barely offsides. It didn’t affect the play at all. At all.”
Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, also expressed frustration and took to social media to criticize the referees. She called them the “MVP” of the game.
It has yet to be seen if the NFL will take action after the public criticisms from Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs, though it will be interesting to see how they’ll respond to the controversy.
