Saints QB Andy Dalton and the New Orleans Saints lost the turnover battle by giving up the ball to the Arizona Cardinals three times in the first half.
Andy Dalton turned the ball over twice on back-to-back possessions late in the first half. Each interception resulted in a pick-six for the Cardinals, which had many Saints fans wondering why Winston was not on the field.
Before being injured early in the 2022 season, Winston had thrown five interceptions, leading fans and critics to wonder if Jameis Winston from Tampa Bay was back after a rather stable 2021 season.
The Winston-led offense was less than spectacular and at one point had fans calling for Dalton.
Who Is QB 1 In The Big Easy
Andy Dalton is not special; in fact, until the matchup against the Cardinals, the Saints’ offense was quite boring. Long slow drives that ate up the clock, did not prove to be the answer the Saints needed.
Winston was present on the sidelines but did not see action in the second half. Head coach Dennis Allen may be to resting Winston, to ensure he is healthy to come back as the Saints starter. At this point, Dalton may no longer be the starter in New Orleans.
It is clear that neither Winston nor Dalton is the long-term solution for the Saints’ offense. Neither QB has shown they are ready to lead the black and gold. The biggest indicator is the fact that neither QB signed a long-term deal with the Saints.
Coach Dennis Allen and staff may be looking for the next QB 1 for the Saints as we speak.
Since Dalton has taken over for the injured Winston, Saints fans have seen some improvement in the Saints’ offense, but nothing monumental.
Will Dalton Be QB 1 In The Big Easy
Overall Andy Dalton and Winston are not fan favorites for QB 1. Nether QB proves that he provides the stability and leadership needed at the quarterback position.
The lack of leadership and dominant offensive possession is held and compared to the recent Brees and Payton era.
Saints fans have been accustomed to quality QB play, that featured drives that more times than not, resulted in points.
At this rate, some fans are wondering if and when Taysom Hill may get the call to start as QB1 in the big easy for the rest of the season. Although Hill is not a traditional QB, he does offer excitement and is respected by defenses when he is on the field.
Could this be the opportunity that Hill needs in order to prove to not only the Saints, but also the NFL that he is in fact QB 1 material? Hill is more of a running-style QB and his style of play is not effective in the NFL. While this may be true, his offensive presence does hold teams accountable in both the run and passing game.
What teams and coaches will not forget is that while at BYU Hill did have impressive passing numbers.
Despite neither QB being the answer, and Hill being a unique and skilled utility player, Coach Allen and his staff have to keep a QB on the field who is not going to turn the ball over on a consistent basis.
One thing is for sure, coach Allen and the Saints need to figure out QB 1 in the upcoming offseason. Another year of subpar QB play will have Saints fans wanting Allen and his crew out of New Orleans.
