After half way through the third game of the 2022 season, it is presently evident that Jameis Winston is not the answer for the Saints.
So far in the 2022 season Winston is 57 of 91, with 3 touchdown passes and 4 interceptions.
Winston played in just 7 games in the 2021 season completing 95 of 161 passes. He was able throw 14 touchdown passes and 3 interceptions.
Winston accumulated 1170 yards in the air, and 166 on the ground.
Why Jameis Is Not The Guy
A team with the offensive weapons like the Saints, must have an accurate quarterback. Having a quarterback that makes smart decisions with the football and stretches a defense is what any offense needs to be successful.
Winston obviously has the arm strength to throw the ball down field. What he lacks is accuracy.
With a minimal threat of a Saints passing game, opposing teams are able to stack the box and shutdown the Saints running game.
Without a running game, opponents are able to stack the box and gamble by sending pressure play after play.
Overall in his career Winston has struggled, and is known for throwing more interceptions than touchdowns.
Additionally in 2019 he threw 33 interceptions, obviously it is very hard to overcome 33 interceptions.
Saints fans were hopeful when Winston arrived in New Orleans, hoping that being in the same room as Drew Brees would payoff.
Winston’s Future With The Saints
In 2021 the Saints signed Winston to a 2-year deal worth 28 million. If his game performance continues in this downward spiral, it will be hard for the Saints to retain a below average quarterback. The Saints have been in the playoffs or in contention almost every year since 2009.
Finally Saints faithful were spoiled for over a decade with great quarterback play.
Regardless of how the Saints finish out the year, if Winston wants to remain in New Orleans he will need to drastically improve his on field performance.
