The San Francisco 49ers will represent the National Football Conference when they face off against the American Football Conference’s Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs are the defending Super Bowl champions and have the chance to be the first back-to-back champions since the New England Patriots in the early-to-mid 2000s.
This matchup is intriguing because we have already seen it happen in 2020 (2019 NFL season). The Chiefs managed to hold off the 49ers for a 31-20 win, the first of Patrick Mahomes‘ Super Bowl career. However, the quarterback matchup will be different this time.
Jimmy Garoppolo now is a quarterback of the Raiders. The 49ers have now been led by the first gem who was taken at the Mr. Irrelevant spot in Brock Purdy. Mr. Irrelevant is the name given to the player taken last in the draft. Purdy has already completed some spectacular things so far in his career. If he helps the 49ers win the Super Bowl on Sunday, he should be considered one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL and not just a ‘game manager”. Here are three predictions for Purdy should the 49ers come out victorious.
1. The San Francisco 49ers will be extending Brock Purdy when the time comes.
Purdy’s contract currently has him playing on a bag of chips and that is mainly due to what Mr. Irrelevant gets paid ($889,000 over 4 years). As he was drafted in 2022, his extension is right around the corner. If the 49ers are smart, they will want to get it done sooner rather than later as the league has seen how difficult as well as important having a great quarterback is. As Purdy will have a bunch of talent around him, they will need to also continue finding ways to balance the budget as their offensive and defensive skill players do command a lot of their cap space.
Unfortunately for 49ers fans, Purdy won’t be playing for a bag of chips. Regardless of winning the Super Bowl or not, he will be making quite more, like the money San Francisco 49ers players Christian McCaffrey commands. In that time, John Lynch will have to decide who to let go and money-wise, what to do.
2. A win in the Super Bowl with Brock Purdy will send a message to the league that they can win and the first Super Bowl appearance was no fluke. It will bring in free agents.
Last season, we saw Christian McCaffrey join the 49ers from the Carolina Panthers. Since then, he has been the dual-threat receiving back that has carved up opposing defenses. If they win the Super Bowl, many players of that high caliber will want to join the 49ers and many of them will want to join for less money than normal.
This happened once the Bucs became a short superteam, the Chiefs’ and the Patriots’ dynasties both had several high caliber players join during their eras (one of which is still ongoing). For 49ers fans, they can get excited for type of players that may still be looking for a permanent home and want to go get a ring in the process.
3. Perhaps, the craziest prediction is that he will be NFL MVP in the not-so-distant future.
In recent months, Cam Newton, a former NFL MVP, who has never won the Super Bowl but has been to one, has called out Purdy saying he is just a “game manager” and nothing more. Firstly, if Brock Purdy wins the Super Bowl, he’ll have something that Newton will never have, and that is a ring. Secondly, it shouldn’t a far-fetched to say that in time, maybe in just a few years, Purdy can win the NFL MVP award. It certainly a challenge, but it was a challenge to get into the league and then do well. He is quite amazing when you think about it.
Regardless of the result on Sunday, Brock Purdy has done fantastically in his first two years of being in the NFL. Mr. Irrelevant is now Mr. Relevant.
