With the 2024 NFL Draft right around the corner, teams with early selections in the first round such as the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders and New England Patriots are concluding their draft processes and rounding down potential selections. The Bears will be on the clock first and most likely select USC standout quarterback Caleb Williams, but the next couple of selections are up in the air with Washington and New England following suit.
Washington Commanders Leaning Towards Jayden Daniels with 2nd Overall Pick
Hypothetically, if Williams is the first selection off the board, it seems that the Commanders are leaning towards drafting Heisman trophy winner Jayden Daniels with the number two overall pick according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Daniels soared up draft boards throughout the college football season and has multiple teams with interest in his dynamic skillset.
New England, who has the third overall pick, is also eyeing Daniels as their potential quarterback of the future, but announced they are open to business this past Wednesday, and trading down is a real possibility. If Washington does go through with selecting Daniels, some negotiations could be made early on draft night.
Who will the New England Patriots Target if They Trade Down?
According to NFL Draft Analyst Tony Pauline, the belief during the NFL Combine in Indianapolis was that New England would trade deeper into the first round and select Michael Penix Jr if Daniels was not an available option. Despite moving back in the draft, the Patriots are still looking for a franchise quarterback and have eyes set on the Heisman finalist out of Washington.
Multiple teams such as the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, and Philadelphia Eagles have been reported to trading up, but Pauline believes one of those franchises will have to pay a hefty price tag in order to acquire New England’s pick. This year’s draft will take place on Thursday night at 8:00 PM Eastern time.
