The Dallas Cowboys were named as a logical trade partner to land a Super Bowl-winning offensive weapon. The Cowboys had enough juice to pull out a much-needed win against the Las Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football in Week 6.
But the Cowboys’ offense still needs to add quality, skilled players if the team wants to make a long run in the playoffs. The defense has mostly carried the team to a 4-2 record.
The Cowboys scored just ten points in their loss to the San Francisco 49ers (a week before beating the Chargers). Quarterback Dak Prescott needs playmakers besides CeeDee Lamb to throw to. The Cowboys don’t appear to have a legitimate replacement for losing Dalton Shultz this offseason.
Dallas Cowboys named as a trade partner for a tight end
Alex Ballentine with Bleacher Report recently wrote about a trade option for the Cowboys that would help their offense. Ballentine thinks the Cowboys should trade with the down-trending Arizona Cardinals for tight end Zach Ertz:
“While most of the team’s injuries are on the defensive side of the ball, the offense has some problems that need to be addressed too. Tight end was a weakness on paper going into the season.
Jake Ferguson has done enough to assuage some of those fears, they aren’t getting much from their other options at the position, though. Through five games Peyton Hendershot and Luke Schoonmaker have combined for just two catches.
The ability to play more 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends) could help Dallas find some consistency. According to 33rd Team, the Cowboys are sixth in EPA per play when in that personnel grouping, but they are just 22nd in 12 usage.
Finding a veteran who can pair with Ferguson could be a move that pays big dividends. Zach Ertz would make a lot of sense as a target. As a former Philadelphia Eagle, the Cowboys are familiar with his game and he’s currently on the final year of his contract with a bad Cardinals team that isn’t going anywhere this season.”
Ertz would bring the Cowboys playoff experience. The three-time Pro Bowl tight end won Super Bowl LII with the Eagles. Ertz isn’t the same player he was during that season, but he can be a reliable pass catcher in big situations this winter.
It wouldn’t hurt the Cowboys if Luke Schoonmaker learned some tips from Ertz.
