The Wisconsin football staff has hinted at a certain former NFL Head Coach spending time with the program during the upcoming season.
Mike Vrabel, the former New England Patriots assistant and Tennessee Titans Head Coach, is a longtime friend of current Wisconsin football Head Coach Luke Fickell. Fickell got the chance to speak about his friend and fellow coach on a podcast and commented about their potential future plans. Vrabel could potentially spend time in Madison as an advisor of some capacity for the football staff.
Wisconsin Football Looking to Host Former NFL Coach Mike Vrabel as Assistant During Upcoming Spring Camp
During a recent installment of the Wilde & Tausch Podcast, Coach Luke Fickell joined the crew to speak about this past season and the current vision for the Badgers team. Fickell touched on the state of running back Chez Mellusi following a tough knee injury and believes Mellusi will not do much during Spring camp. The running back is still on track to return next season, but the load management for Mellusi will be closely monitored during practices.
Outside of the running back situation, Fickell touched on another interesting subject that involved an old friend and accomplished NFL Head Coach. Mike Vrabel was fired from his coaching job with the Titans this off-season, and has not found another home yet. Fickell admitted he had been in contact with Vrabel and stated that Wisconsin football will “…see how deep we can get involved.”
At this point in time, Vrabel has not been hired for another NFL gig despite plenty of rumors surrounding the coach. Fickell admitted he could not announce anything or claim that Vrabel will be a coach this upcoming season due to a large degree of uncertainty. However, the door for the coach to join the staff has been opened.
Can the Wisconsin Badgers Football Staff Add Mike Vrabel for the 2024 Season?
After struggling to find a spot in the NFL, it is very possible that Vrabel could spend a year as a staff member at a college before returning to the pros. Vrabel is known to be a defensive guru and once served as a linebackers coach and defensive assistant for the Ohio State Buckeyes to start his coaching career. Vrabel has also long established himself as a physical, hard-nosed coach which could definitely fit into the Wisconsin football staff.
Wisconsin Football Aiming to Display Stronger, More Competitive Squad in 2024
There is no doubt this past season Wisconsin football fell far below the expectations they had set for themselves following the hiring of Fickell. Now, the staff and team are more motivated than ever to produce a better product than what they displayed in 2023.
Coach Fickell has worked hard to recruit the players in High School and the transfer portal who fit the same mindset and want to play hard, physical football. Fickell could potentially do the same with his staff in 2024 by adding plenty of knowledge and skill in Mike Vrabel.
