Wink Martindale’s reported resignation on Monday afternoon was a shock to many involved with Big Blue. His defense finished the season by holding the Philadelphia Eagles to 10 points. The New York Giants had a rough season, with some troubling defensive numbers, but finished the regular season tied for the most takeaways. There was promise defensively.
Then, Martindale’s announcement came, and everyone was left searching for answers. Was it the reported rift with head coach Brian Daboll? Did Drew Wilkins and Kevin Wilkins mean that much to Martindale? Multiple Giants coaches were expectedly fired on Monday. Wink Martindale chose to leave after Daboll publicly said that the team wanted Martindale back. Except, Martindale hasn’t officially resigned yet despite rumored signs that he was announcing his bold move during Sunday’s game.
Option 1: Wink Martindale Simply Didn’t Finish the Resignation Process
This is boring, but maybe Martindale just forgot to file paperwork like the rest of us. It would be puzzling that he made a point to announce his resignation publicly without following through promptly, but who are we to judge? Wink Martindale is truly out the door, it just isn’t official yet.
Option 2: The New York Giants are Still Mole Hunting
This has been a popular conspiracy for months regarding the Giants, ever since Jay Glazer said that there was tension within the MetLife Stadium locker room. Glazer said there may be a firing midseason, and later that day, Daboll handed Wink Martindale a game ball following a a win. It was a series of events that looked weird from every angle.
Multiple members of the organization denied that there was any bad blood between Daboll and Martindale. Back then, people said the Giants were sniffing out leaks, and after reports of Martindale not resigning officially came to light, people are back to that conspiracy. Maybe telling the world that Martindale resigned was another step toward removing loose lips from the ship.
Option #3: Wink Martindale Wants to Get Fired and is Making Things Uncomfortable
Martindale has always said that New York is a destination, not a stepping stone. Daboll said on Monday morning “My expectation is that Wink and Kafka will both be back.” Yet, the most plausible scenario here is that Daboll has been trying to nudge Wink Martindale out of the door subtly and Martindale will not go gently into the good night.
Daboll and GM Joe Schoen canned Drew Wilkins, one of Martindale’s most trusted assistants dating back to Baltimore. Martindale reportedly doesn’t like Daboll’s style, so he’s been leaking his disdain to the media all season. If Wink Martindale got himself fired, the Giants would still have to pay him, but he could coach anywhere that would take him. Martindale has been playing chess with New York since November, with the Giants organization matching every move.
Martindale wants out with the money. Loudly announcing his resignation sends a clear message, but failing to resign puts pressure on New York to not appear as a dysfunctional mess. A faux resignation is Wink Martindale’s last-ditch effort after Daboll beat him to the punch in the media battle this Monday.
Earlier than usual press conferences. Kiefer Sutherland-led television series-referencing play sheets. Jay Glazer reports. The New York Giants and Wink Martindale are engaged in a cold war. For now, that means that Martindale is still legally bound to be New York’s defensive coordinator for one more year, despite what was previously reported.
