Four weeks into the 2022 season and I’m sure about only two things: 1) Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State are all really good. Outside of those three, I’m not convinced of anything else, and 2) I am going to make you some money if you follow my picks. Each Friday, I post my Wells’ Winners. You can decide how you want to thank me, but I do accept gratitude in forms of bourbon and cigars. We went 2-0-2 last weekend, so let’s get started with the best bets for Week 5 in college football….
(All lines are accurate as of this posting)
#4 Michigan @ Iowa UNDER 42.0
The Wolverines have hit the under in 3 of their 4 games. The Hawkeyes have as well. Michigan’s defense is only giving up 11 points per game so far, and Iowa’s offense is historically awful. The saving grace for Iowa is their defense is a typical Iowa defense, having given up only 20 points all year so far.
The last 3 meetings between these two programs have produced totals of 45, 13 and 27 points. Under is the play here.
Prediction: Wolverines 30 – Hawkeyes 7
#2 Alabama @ #20 Arkansas UNDER 61
Arkansas is coming off a crushing loss last weekend to Texas A&M in Arlington, while Alabama continues to demoralize opponents week after week at home. That being said, Alabama needed a missed field goal to escape Texas in week 2, and this is the only other road game they will have played to date. The Tide are 5-5 in their last 10 road games against the over/under. Last season the teams combined for 77 in Tuscaloosa. The historical data is all over the place between these two, but I think Saban will suck the life out of the stadium in Fayetteville this weekend and beat the Hogs handily, keeping the total well under the line.
Prediction: Crimson Tide 34 – Razorbacks 17
Iowa State @ Kansas (+3)
What in the wide world of sports is a-goin on around here? Kansas, yes KANSAS, is undefeated! Rock Chalk, my Lawrence friends. Ride the Jayhawk train until the wheels come off. Take KU to cover, as they have all year long.
Prediction: Jayhawks 24 – Cyclones 20
#10 NC State @ #5 Clemson OVER 43.5
Easiest pick of the weekend. Clemson’s games so far are averaging over 65 points combined. NC State’s are averaging over 47 points combined. Only once in the last 5 head-to-head meetings has the total been under 43.5 points. It’s over, it’s all over.
Prediction: Tigers 31 – Wolfpack 24
There you have it, amigos. Those are Wells’ Winners for this week!
Season record: 2-0-2
