Dallas Cowboys put out a lackluster display for their opening preseason game of the season. Cowboys fans are expecting to see more from their team during their week two performance. While the game was a loss, there is a silver lining, this is preseason we are talking about. Since the game, the Cowboys have made changes, cutting players to narrow down the roster. Some aspects to look for during their next game include the second string quarterback position, the penalty problem, and the overall quality of play from the offense and defense.
Week Two Performance Expectations: The Quarterback Situation
Prior to the game most Cowboys fans would have agreed we already knew our number two quarterback to be Cooper Rush. After the performance from Rush and Ben DiNucci it appears that we have more to think about. Cooper Rush completed 12/20 passes for 89 yards and one interception, while Ben DiNucci completed 9/16 for 112 yards and one touchdown.
Watching the game it appeared DiNucci was able to run the offense quite well. Keep in mind that comes within the confines of the game plan being a preseason game. Cowboys fans have regular season experience with Rush, after his performance it felt like more of the same. Nothing stood out as improvement, and this is not bashing Rush but noticing DiNucci. It will be interesting to see each quarterback’s week two performance.
Penalties, a lot of them
While we had a few poor games last season, plagued with penalties, overall this was not a concern coming into this year. After watching flags coming from left and right, I’m not sure what to expect. That being said, these are professionals and are expected to conduct themselves as such.
Penalties can be a major catalyst in a football game and we simply cannot afford to continue to play sloppy. Playing disciplined and under control should be a point of emphasis the coaching staff is stressing for their upcoming game and season. Cowboys fans expect nothing less.
Overall Performance
It is easy to brush off losses as just a preseason game, and the concept is valid. But let’s face it, fans want to see their team win. It does not matter if the starters are out their on the field or not. The overall concept is that our team came out and played better than the team on the opposite sidelines. Simply put, football is better when your team wins.
