The Washington Commanders have been aggressive during the 2024 NFL Free Agency period as they continue to use their significant cap space and get players to join the team. One player who has signed is former New York Jets and Carolina Panthers linebacker Frankie Luvu as he agreed to a three-year, $36 million deal to join the Commanders.
This move is significant as he had a standout year last season for the Panthers. He started all 17 games for the first time in his six-year career and recorded 5.5 sacks, five pass deflections and 125 total tackles. Luvu also improved in pass coverage as he was targeted 56 times and the opposing receiver caught 34 passes (60.7 completion percentage).
With a defensive-minded head coach with the Washington Commanders in Dan Quinn as well a good defensive core, this move will help the team attempt to compete for a playoff spot in the NFC.
What else does the Washington Commanders need to do this offseason?
With the NFC East continuing to get tougher as the Philadelphia Eagles signed both defensive end Bryce Huff and running back Saquon Barkley, things are going to be tough for the Washington Commanders. They hold the second pick in the 2024 NFL draft and will likely have their pick of the draft class outside of USC quarterback Caleb Williams to get a potential franchise quarterback.
This team is going to look and feel really different than it did at the end of last season but they still have some holes, specifically at linebacker to fill. The only non-free agent linebackers from last year’s roster are middle linebackers Jamin Davis and Brandon Bouyer Randle and outside linebacker Keandre Jones. This team needs to find an identity and stick to it as they look to become a powerhouse in the NFC with their new ownership.
