The Washington Commanders need a quarterback. Sam Howell isn’t that guy. But can an old reliable be the answer to the Commanders’ quarterback problem? Enter Minnesota Vikings Kirk Cousins, who is expected to hit free agency.
Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus recently floated the idea of the Commanders reuniting with Cousins, who has spent the last six NFL seasons with the Vikings — the same number of years he played for Washington before signing with the NFC North franchise in 2018.
If the Commanders were to simply replicate the kind of deal Cousins coveted during his time in Minnesota — a three-year, fully guaranteed contract — it would make sense for both sides.
It would also free up the No. 2 overall draft pick and make Washington open for trade business.
What If The Washington Commanders Reunite With Kirk Cousins?
While Cousins’ Achilles injury could mean that he’s a risky investment, did not he just show up at the NFL Honors dancing on the stage as Monson mentioned as well?
Plus taking Cousins plugs an immediate solution to a major positional need for Washington, which finished the 2023 NFL season just 25th in the NFL with 19.4 points per game and 24th in total offense with 312.8 total yards per contest.
They were also the highest-usage team in terms of passing plays, but Washington was also just 19th with 219.1 passing yards per outing. Clearly, the Commanders wanted to utilize their talented wide receiving corps but just did not have a capable quarterback to maximize it. Again, Cousins could be that guy.
And if the Washinton Commanders do indeed land Cousins, that would get them much more flexibility with what to do with their No. 2 pick at the 2024 NFL Draft. They can still use it to draft an elite QB prospect both as a Kirk Cousins insurance and as his eventual successor. Think of Jordan Love with the Green Bay Packers. Or, the Commanders can trade that pick.
In six seasons with Washington, Cousins recorded 16,206 passing yards and 99 touchdowns with 55 interceptions on 65.5 percent completion rate.
