Has Kirk Cousins already played his final game for the Minnesota Vikings? Based on reports, this could very well be the case as the 35-year-old heads into free agency this summer. He has not been able to secure an extension with Minnesota, and it does not sound like the Vikings are very eager to offer him a new deal.
Even though he’s no spring chicken and despite the fact that he’s battled through significant injuries in recent years, Cousins still remains to be a sought-after name. In fact, two teams have already emerged as potential landing spots for the four-time Pro Bowler if he ends up leaving Minnesota.
Raiders, Falcons Seen as Possible Destinations for Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins
There won’t be a shortage of interested parties if Cousins does hit free agency. According to Albert Breer of SI, the Las Vegas Raiders and the Atlanta Falcons are two teams to keep an eye on. The fact that both the Raiders and the Falcons have hired new offensive coordinators could play a key role in Cousins’ decision for his next team:
“The success he’s had in the Sean McVay/Kyle Shanahan offense, both early in his career with Kyle in Washington, and over the last two years under Kevin O’Connell in Minnesota (and before that with Kevin Stefanski and Gary and Klint Kubiak) would ostensibly make him an attractive candidate to join new offensive coordinators in Las Vegas (Luke Getsy) or Atlanta (Zac Robinson), who have strong ties to that coaching family,” Breer wrote.
As Breer indicated above, both Luke Getsy of the Raiders and Zac Robinson of the Falcons fall under the same coaching tree that Cousins has found so much success with through the years. It’s only logical for Cousins to strongly consider these two squads — and their new OCs — as his next stop should his time with the Vikings come to an end.
Bree also noted that based on the deals previously secured by the likes of Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo last season on the “B-level market,” as much as $30 million per season “would seem to be attainable” for Cousins.
As such, this is the number the Vikings, the Raiders, the Falcons, and any other team out there will need to consider if they’re serious about their pursuit of Cousins.
