Washington Commanders: Ramifications On the 2024 NFL Draft If They Select J.J. McCarthy

The Washington Commanders own the second pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and one of the quarterbacks they like is J.J. McCarthy from Michigan. With the Chicago Bears most likely to take Caleb Williams number one overall, it feels like the NFL Draft really begins at number two with Washington.

They do need to draft a quarterback. The betting odds went up on Monday for McCarthy to be drafted second overall by the Commanders. This could be seen as a major surprise with Washington potentially drafting him over Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels.

It seemed all along that Daniels could be the second pick in the draft, but McCarthy would be a major surprise. J.J. McCarthy has been rising up NFL Draft boards as of late. What would the possible ramifications be of the 2024 NFL Draft if the Washington Commanders did make this move?

The Washington Commanders Drafting J.J. McCarthy second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft Would Mean That the New England Patriots Would Stay Third But Someone Would Trade Up with the Arizona Cardinals For the Fourth Selection

The Commanders taking McCarthy with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft would have a ton of ramifications. The first one would be that the New England Patriots would most likely not trade out of the third pick. New England would either select Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels. Whoever the Patriots select, one of them would be available at number four.

With the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Chargers not needing a quarterback, it is possible that they would draft a wide receiver. However, would the New York Giants move up with Arizona to select whichever one is left so that the Minnesota Vikings or the Denver Broncos don’t jump them for a quarterback?

That is very well in play. The Cardinals would rather do business with the Giants rather than those two teams back Arizona would only move back to six rather than 11 to the Vikings or 12 to the Broncos. The Cardinals would still be able to get a wide receiver whether it would be Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, or Rome Odunze.

This is why the 2024 NFL Draft is going to be so unpredictable this season. A lot of fans will react accordingly if the Washington Commanders do select quarterback J.J. McCarthy second overall from the Michigan Wolverines. It would create other chaos at the top of the 2024 NFL Draft.
