Guns and the Colorado Buffaloes. Welcome to the 2024 season. Assistant coach Warren Sapp made a reference recently to the ammunition Colorado has on their roster.
Warren Sapp says the Colorado Buffaloes have bullets
Sapp’s spoke to the media on Tuesday about the defense. Per a transcription of Sapp’s comments by Sports Illustrated, Sapp said he has “bullets” to work with:
“I wouldn’t single out one guy, because we’re a pack. We’ll be six-deep… We just mixing and matching, we got bullets. You get shot with a .38 or 9mm, you pick it.”
Deion Sanders was upset about a report on guns
Sapp’s comments are questionable, given the controversy surrounding the team this summer. Per a report by Steve Corder with Athlon Sports, a former Colorado player said the Deion Sanders’ program had a gun problem:
“It’s like a real-life Grand Theft Auto video game,” one former player said. “There are many distractions with fights, guns, and money floating around. The environment is unlike any I’ve come from before.”
Sanders appeared to take issue with the report. He also took issue with another publication when he refused to answer questions from CBS reporters. But he got big headlines.
Manufacturing a perpetual controversy
Sapp’s comments feel engineered for controversy. Sapp himself was the subject of controversy when reports surfaced Sanders planned to hire the NFL Hall of Fame defensive lineman. Sapp has a controversial history with lawsuits. Violence Free Colorado opposed Sapp’s hiring due to alleged sexual assault and other criminal charges being brought against him.
Colorado is getting good publicity out of the comments. Colorado gets a lot of media attention for a team that went 4-8 in 2023. Sanders and his staff are pushing the right buttons.
Will it backfire?
