Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson is still bitter over his ex-quarterback’s decision to transfer to Notre Dame after last season. Clawson commented on his frustrations with the current college football landscape after his program was embarrassed 45-7 by the Irish on Saturday.
Clawson wasn’t thrilled when Hartman transferred to Notre Dame during the offseason. But his ire is more than a football matter; Clawson was upset the Irish celebrated Hartman during his final home game at Notre Dame for Senior Day against the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest’s head coach is bitter at the Irish
According to David Hale with ESPN, Clawson said he took issue with Notre Dame playing the song “I will always love you” as Hartman left the stadium:
“[Notre Dame] bought him and rented him for a year, and now they love him?” Clawson said. “This is where college football is.
“When that video played, it’s just like, ‘Holy cow, this is where college football is,'” Clawson said. “Sam and I had a great discussion before the game and after the game, and I love the young man. I really do. I don’t blame him at all for what he did. That’s the system now. For him to have the opportunity to have that experience, and make that type of money in one year, who can fault him..
That’s reality, and there’s no point in complaining about it,” Clawson said. “Here’s a guy that we recruited and we developed. They’re putting a video on him saying, ‘We will always love you.’ Like, you only dated him for a couple of months. It can’t be love. We’re the ones that love him. We had five years with him. You rented him for a season.”
The Demon Deacons won 19 games in the previous two seasons with Harman under center. After starting the year with a 4-7 record sans Hartman, they’re not bowl-eligible this season. One understands why Clawson would be frustrated, but his point isn’t valid.

Hartman has every reason to embrace his new school’s traditions this season. The Irish should be able to celebrate a player who will go into their record books.
Clawson wasn’t loyal to his first head coaching gig at Fordham. He’s risen every rank he could at the college football business level. And he’s sold every recruit on the greatness of every school he’s coached at.
Why shouldn’t Hartman be able to celebrate his business decision with Notre Dame?
