The Seattle Seahawks are embarking on a new era under new head coach Mike Macdonald.
It will be the first time in more than a decade the Seahawks will enter a new season without Pete Carroll at the helm, but Macdonald was the architect behind one of the most dominant defenses in the NFL over the last few seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.
In a division led by the San Francisco 49ers, the Seahawks don’t appear to be a Super Bowl contender heading into 2024 under a new coaching staff. They are likely riding with Geno Smith again at QB — who shined when he took over for Russell Wilson initially — but struggled at times last season. The Seattle Seahawks also signed former Washington QB Sam Howell in the offseason, who brings starting experience and could possibly push Smith for the starting job, especially if things go south on offense early in the year.

While Seattle should be competitive, most insiders and fans are sort of viewing 2024 as sort of a rebuild, with a new coaching staff coming in and implementing a new playbook and culture, which will be a major shift from the Carroll era.
Still, the Seattle Seahawks aren’t going to just roll over and not compete this season, They finished the last two regular seasons with a (9-8) record — and while they missed the playoffs last year — they slipped into the Wildcard Round in 2022 before their season ended to their division foe, in a 41-23 loss to the 49ers.
For the last few years, much of the roster has remained in tact, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. This year they will be running a new offense under first-year OC Ryan Grubb, who was responsible for the high-flying Washington Huskies aerial attack over the last few seasons with Michael Penix under center.
While there will be an inevitable learning curve, the Seahawks have the core in place to put up points and compete on a weekly basis.
Seattle Seahawks Could Stun NFL By Trading WR Tyler Lockett

As it stands, the Seahawks have one of the top wide receiver trios in the NFL, with DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and 2023 first-round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Due to the strong rookie season from the former Ohio State wideout last season, Bleacher Report recently suggested the Seahawks attempt to trade Lockett who has been named an All-Pro three years in Seattle since the Seahawks drafted him in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
Lockett restructured his contract this year to remain a Seahawk, but with a cap hit north of $30 million in 2025 this is probably his final season in the Pacific Northwest.
Fans of the team may be fiercely loyal to Lockett, but the new coaching staff isn’t. And Lockett is just the kind of proven veteran that a team could make an offer for if there’s an injury in camp or a young wideout fails to shine in camp.
The Seahawks are a good team. But they aren’t a Super Bowl team—and moving Lockett for the right draft pick wouldn’t make them markedly worse.”
Davenport also noted that Lockett’s production declined with the Seattle Seahawks in 2023, as he tallied 79 receptions for 894 yards (his lowest mark since 2017) and five touchdowns. The year before, Lockett had 84 receptions for 1,033 yards and nine touchdowns.

As we saw with Russell Wilson two years ago, the Seahawks would rather deal a fan favorite and veteran superstar a year too early rather than a year too late. And with Lockett entering his age-32 season, there’s a case to be made that Seattle is better off trading him now.
For his career, Lockett has 612 receptions for 7,994 yards and 59 touchdowns.
It’s hard to predict what kind of compensation the Seattle Seahawks could get in return for Lockett, but a fairly high draft pick feels reasonable. This move makes perfect sense right now and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it happen.

The Seahawks just restructured Lockett to create cap space. With a new coaching staff installing the offense, I don’t see Seattle moving any key players until mid-season. I can see the Seahawks moving Lockett to the slot and JSN to WR2 to take adventures of JSN’s speed. Realistically, theyll look at moving Lockett next off-season.
