Tom Brady made 10 Super Bowl appearances throughout his NFL career and won seven titles in the process. While he only has three losses in the big game, it definitely stings for him. In fact, there’s one loss during his time with the New England Patriots that he couldn’t even forget.
In Episode 5 of The Dynasty series, Brady admitted that he still can’t believe they actually lost Super Bowl 42 to the New York Giants.
New England Patriots Legend Tom Brady Wants To Change Super Bowl 42
For those not in the know, the Patriots had a perfect regular season in 2007, tallying an immaculate 16-0 record. They entered the playoffs as heavy favorites and played like one, dismantling the Jacksonville Jaguars and the then San Diego Chargers en route to Super Bowl 42.
They faced the Giants in the finale, with the New York squad considered as heavy underdogs at the time after entering as a Wild Card team. However, Eli Manning and Co. carried the momentum they got from three straight wins against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers to pull off an upset.
New York beat New England 17-14 in the Super Bowl 42, with Manning bagging the MVP honors after his two-touchdown performance.
It was definitely quite the shocking turn of events, prompting Brady to declare that it’s the one game that he would want to change if it’s possible.
Of course Brady knows it’s impossible to go back in time and change things, but it only furthers deliver the point on how much he regrets being able to close that season out with a bang.
“I was like, what the f**k. That year we dominated, we destroyed teams. How did we lose? If there’s one game in history, I’d change, it’s that game. But you can’t change it. I think what you realize about football and about life is you never have it quite mastered. It was a tough lesson for me to learn,” Brady explained in the documentary, per NESN.
To make things even worse for the Patriots, a win would have given them the first-ever Super Bowl three-peat. They were so close to getting it, but in the end, they just collapsed under immense pressure.
New England Patriots’ Super Bowl Run After Loss To New York Giants
Unfortunately for Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, it took them some time to return to the big dance after that heartbreaker to the New York Giants.
They missed the postseason in 2008 and lost in their first games in the playoffs in the 2009 and 2010 campaigns. They returned to the Super Bowl in 2011 but lost to Eli Manning and the Giants once again.
Brady and the Patriots returned to dominance in the latter half of the 2010s, bagging the title in 2014, 2016 and 2018–missing out on a three-peat once again after losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017.
