The Tennessee Titans have chosen young Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as the young figurehead to lead them into the future. Callahan has done an excellent job developing elite quarterback Joe Burrow over the past four seasons and will have a similar challenge regarding young quarterback Will Levis. While Callahan has enjoyed a warm reception after his emotional goodbye to the city of Cincinnati, it is officially time to get to work and he has already requested interviews for his high level staff positions.
Titans Head Coach Callahan brings in Offensive Coordinator Interviews
As of today, there are two candidates that Tennessee has formally requested to meet for an interview at the offensive coordinator and both of these coaches bring dramatically different strengths to the table. Given what Callahan has to offer, there is certainly a philosophy that fits his skillset more than the other.
Nick Holz, Jacksonville Jaguars, Passing Game Coordinator
The first candidate that is being interviewed is a long time confidante of Callahan. While Holz did an excellent job maximizing the potential of Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence last season, he actually has a long connection with Callahan as they both played on the same De La Salle High School football team in Concord, California from 2002 to 2006. After their high school experience, Callahan landed Holz with his coaching position in 2007 as an offensive quality control coach at the University of Nebraska under Callahan’s father Bill.
After his time at Nebraska, Holz coached with the Oakland / Las Vegas Raiders between 2012 to 2021 under various offensive coaching positions where he once again worked with Callahan in 2018 when the latter was quarterbacks coach. The two have clearly been good friends for a long time and similar to the way Bengals coach Zac Taylor filled his staff, Callahan may be most eager to fill the higher level positions with people that he trusts. Clearly there is no one that ranks higher in the trust department to Callahan than Holz.
Eric Studesville, Miami Dolphins, Running Backs Coach
While Holz is a close friend of Callahan, the secondary option would be Studesville with an alternative coaching strategy. While Holz and Callahan would clearly be cut from the same cloth with their affinity with the passing game, Studesville arguably fits the current Tennessee roster better with a skillset focused on building quick-hitting running attacks. Studesville has worked as a running backs coach with the Dolphins, Broncos, Bills and Giants for the past twenty years and clearly has a lot of experience with overpowering running attacks.
Like Holz, Studesville worked with Callahan in the past when both coaches were with the Broncos from 2010 to 2015. While he may not have a relationship all the way back to childhood, the rushing-focused offensive coordinator may go well with a passing-focused head coach in a unique way. While both coaches have certainly declared their affinity for their preference, the balance that the dual coaching strategy would bring to the offense could be dangerous with the talent available on the Tennessee roster.
Who is the Best Pick?
Both Studesville and Holz come with some huge advantages and clearly both have the trust of Callahan. While Studesville is an excellent coach, it is likely that Holz will win the job based on the similar strategic mindsets between him and the hiring coach. Regardless of who is hired, Tennessee will need a complete overhaul of the offensive scheme and Callahan is the perfect man for the job.
