The New England Patriots started the season off hot, going into Cincinnati and beating a Bengals team with a chance to win the Super Bowl.
A week later, the Patriots went to overtime again against Seattle but lost a close one. Then, on Thursday night, they headed to New York to take on the Jets, and it got ugly.
New England lost the game 24-3 and couldn’t move the ball all night. The offense had issues throwing and running the football, and the offensive line couldn’t block anyone.
Starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett had a rough night throwing less than 100 yards and was benched in the fourth quarter for the third overall pick in the 2024 draft, Drake Maye.
Maye came in and almost threw an interception on his first pass, but after that, he settled in and looked okay, completing four of his eight pass attempts for 22 yards and picking up 12 yards with his legs.
The rookie only played one drive, but it looked promising. However, he can’t be thrown out there again this season.
Drake Maye Can’t See The Field In 2024
Even though Maye looked okay in his NFL debut, he still needs to sit, learn, and let the game come to him that way.
New England has one of the worst offensive lines and receiving core in the NFL, and it deals with a rookie head coach.
The Patriots are in zero position right now to start a rookie quarterback who still isn’t ready to start.
The best thing for Maye is to sit on the bench and learn like Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes did eight years ago.
We just saw 2023 first-round pick Bryce Young benched in Carolina for not performing well, and a lot of that had to do with head coaching changes, a bad offensive line, and weak skill position players, just like the Patriots are dealing with.
Let Maye sit back, learn the NFL game, and don’t throw him into the fire until next season, when the offensive line gets upgraded and some better-skilled position players come in and help.
