San Francisco 49ers All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey has had a lingering calf strain since training camp. The calf strain has turned into chronic Achilles tendinitis. After considering all his options he has decided to seek out further options outside the country. He left for Germany to see a specialist this week for a new opinion. Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed McCaffrey’s journey, saying that he hopes that this consultation will provide a way to fix a problem that has been around since August.
McCaffrey was unable to finish training camp and opted to rest his Achilles. Assuming ample rest would heal the tendinitis so he could play Week 1 of the NFL. However, soon the pain resurfaced and he was placed on the injured reserve list (IR) on September 14. He’ll be eligible to return Week 6 against the Seahawks, but unfortunately with these types of injuries, it could linger all year. Knowing that there is no timetable set for his return. Doctor Morse explains the different treatments available in other countries that McCaffrey could be seeking out. Treatments that are not “approved” here in the USA.

This is not good news for the San Francisco 49ers, given that CMC has been their superstar after being acquired from the Carolina Panthers, where he missed 23 games in two seasons. He was able to play two straight seasons with the 49ers and only miss one game, a Week 18 game that was meaningless. Remember McCaffrey was the NFL’s best running back last season with 2,023 total yards. He also scored 21 touchdowns, making him the league’s top scorer and winning the AP Offensive Player Award.
San Francisco 49ers Notable Injuries
The 49ers have not only missed CMC this season, but at the moment, have also lost WR Deebo Samuel, TE George Kittle, and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave.
Hargrave is out for the season with a partially torn triceps that needs surgery and Deebo and Kittle will only be out for a few weeks. New to the injury report, but probably nothing too concerning, Purdy and Greenlaw are also dealing with soreness. Trying to see the silver lining, the hope is that McCaffrey’s trip to Germany will mark a turning point in his rehabilitation and that the 49ers player will be able to return to the field and contribute to another playoff run.
For now, we’ll keep an eye on Germany as McCaffrey looks for a fix to the Achilles problem, and 49ers fans hope he’ll be back in form soon. This team hopes the trip is a success and helps CMC get back to his old self and bring some much-needed support to their offense.
