The Week 2 edition of the Associated Press college football rankings were released on Tuesday following the performances that surrounded the headlines of Week 1 contests. Surprising jumps and expected falls highlighted the newest version of the rankings. However, fresh off of a 52-10 win over Louisiana-Monroe, Texas remained outside of the Top 25 ahead of the Week 2 clash against the Crimson Tide.
#1 Alabama vs. Texas
The Longhorns and Crimson Tide square off Saturday (Noon ET; FOX) for the first time since the 2010 BCS National Championship. As expected, Alabama retained the #1 ranking in the newest polls before making the trip to Austin. The match up will be Steve Sarkisian’s first against his former boss, Nick Saban, since his hiring at Texas in 2021. Sarkisian served as the offensive coordinator for the Crimson Tide at the interim level in 2016, and then again in the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Saban currently holds a 26-2 record when facing former assistants. Both losses, however, came in the 2021 season in Texas A&M’s (Jimbo Fisher) upset win over the Alabama in College Station, and to Georgia (Kirby Smart) in the CFP championship game. Both teams enter the contest with 1-0 records after big wins in Week 1 over Utah State (Alabama) and Louisiana- Monroe (Texas). Lifetime, Texas holds the advantage in the series, 7-1-1.
Week 2 AP Rankings
The newest AP Poll showed much movement in many parts of the nation. The nation’s highest riser was the move of the Florida Gators, who make their debut on the rankings at #12 after defeating previously 7th-ranked Utah. The largest move was one out of the rankings, as Oregon moved from #11 to unranked after a big loss to newly #2-ranked Georgia. In the Big 12, Oklahoma (7), Baylor (9), and Oklahoma State (11) maintained their appearance with small adjustments in the Top 25, while Texas and Kansas State received praise from voters.
