Owners of a perfect record and ranked atop the AP Poll Top 25, the Texas football program will be tested this weekend against the Oklahoma Sooners at the Cotton Bowl, the home of their annual clash. Known as the Red River Rivalry, the Texas Longhorns hold a 63-51-5 record against Oklahoma but will be out for vengeance after blowing a fourth-quarter lead against their archrival last season. Meanwhile, Texas will face arguably their biggest season test, especially if the Sooners can get healthier heading into Saturday’s tilt.
Oklahoma notably played two weekends ago down their top five wide receivers and a rotational running back but pulled off the win behind the heroics of true freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. With star receiver Deion Burks and five-star freshman running back Taylor Tatum nearing a return, one prominent sportscaster believes a big Texas win this weekend would solidify themself as the best team in the country.
ESPN’s Matt Barrie Eyeing Convincing Texas Football Victory
On the Always College Football Show with Greg McElroy, ESPN’s Matt Barrie spoke on this year’s rendition of the Red River Rivalry:
Again, it is a trust thing, and I trust Texas implicity right now because they got the wins they needed to. They went on the road to Michigan and got the win. And they have the best quarterback situation in the country. I think Texas really will have something to say about being the best team in the country.
I really believe anybody’s capable of being beaten. Still, if Texas goes in there and handles Oklahoma and beats them convincingly, then you really do have to start thinking, okay, we’re going to see Texas, Georgia, in two weeks. So we will know more about them then, but for at least one week, based on what we just saw in Week 6, I would say Texas probably lays claim as the best team in the country.
Per McElroy, Texas football will face its first challenge this season, explicitly clashing with a team housing “legit” offensive weapons (sans injury). More specifically, McElroy introduced the idea that a convincing win on Saturday by the Texas Longhorns would solidify themselves as the best team in the country.
Barrie agrees that a massive win by the Texas Longhorns would widen the distance between the Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, and the Penn State Nittany Lions, among others, as the best team in the country. Ideally, a Texas win on Saturday against OU would put them in a position to host the Georgia Bulldogs the following week for a chance to develop their College Football Playoff resume further.
